The World Athletics Cross Country Championships are the most gruelling, ‘back to basics’ event of the World Athletics Series. Rain, sleet, snow or shine, nothing stops athletes as they navigate challenging terrains (both natural and man-made) to be crowned not just World Champion but recognised as the world’s toughest runner. An event with an extraordinary history, cross country running dates back to the 19th century and has evolved into one of the most competitive distance running events in the world. In addition to the five official championship races, recent editions have also included mass participation races for the public to experience the thrill and fun of cross country running –often on the same course that the elite runners complete. An excellent opportunity to showcase the destination’s landscape, the one-day event, held every even year, may become an Olympic qualifying event as the discipline is under consideration for Olympic status in 2024.
