Two days, 32 finals and the world's best athletes ready to fight for titles as the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, hosts the Wanda Diamond League Final this weekend (16-17).
World and defending Diamond League champions head to Hayward Field looking to end their seasons on a high, but the athletes who missed out on top honours in Budapest will be out for revenge. Faith Kipyegon and Noah Lyles, both of whom won two individual titles in the Hungarian capital&nbsp;last month, are among those in action on day one, while day two features stars such as Mondo Duplantis, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Mary Moraa, Shericka Jackson, Ryan Crouser and Grant Holloway.
The action on Saturday will start at 10:50 local time (GMT -7) with the women's javelin and the main programme will kick off at 12:00 local time with the men's 400m hurdles. Sunday's events will begin at 11:15 local time with the women's high jump and the main programme will begin at 12:00 local time with the men's 800m.

How to follow and watch the Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene

After 13 meetings from May to September, the final fields are now set as the Wanda Diamond League gets ready to crown its 2023 champions at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, this weekend (16-17).
The world&rsquo;s best athletes &ndash; including world and defending Diamond League champions Mondo Duplantis, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Mary Moraa, Shericka Jackson and Grant Holloway &ndash; head to Hayward Field looking to end their seasons on a high, but the athletes who missed out on top honours in Budapest last month will be out for revenge.
Diamond trophies and top $30,000 prizes are up for grabs in the 32 finals taking place across the two days of action. The first 15 finals will be contested on Saturday (16) and the remaining 17 &ndash; 14 of which contain their newly crowned world champions &ndash; will take place on Sunday (17).
The majority of athletes qualified for the finals by earning points at the 13 series meetings, while others have been entered as national or global <a href="https://www.diamondleague.com/news/general/explainer-wild-cards-in-the-wdl-final/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wild cards</a>.

<h3>11:15 &ndash; women&rsquo;s high jump</h3>
After claiming her first global senior outdoor crown at last month&rsquo;s World Championships in Budapest, Ukraine&rsquo;s Yaroslava Mahuchikh carried that winning form to the Diamond League meetings in Xiamen and Brussels. Now she targets a second Diamond League title.
While she is the current world No.1, Mahuchikh hasn&rsquo;t been unbeatable in 2023 and the athletes to have finished ahead of her in Lausanne and Monaco &ndash; Australia&rsquo;s Nicola Olyslagers and her Ukrainian compatriot Iryna Gerashchenko &ndash; will be among her challengers in Eugene.
Olyslagers, the bronze medallist in Budapest, equalled her Oceanian record of 2.02m in Lausanne &ndash; making her a joint world leader alongside Mahuchikh. Yuliya Levchenko joins her Ukrainian compatriots in Eugene, while the field also features Serbia&rsquo;s 18-year-old world U20 and European senior bronze medallist Angelina Topic.
<h3>11:30 &ndash; men&rsquo;s discus</h3>
Sweden&rsquo;s Daniel Stahl and Slovenia&rsquo;s Kristjan Ceh have gone head to head on 10 occasions so far in 2023, with the score currently tied at 5-5. Eugene is the decider. Ceh, the 2022 world champion, has more wins on the Diamond League circuit this year &ndash; having finished top in Doha, Rabat and Stockholm &ndash; but Stahl secured the big one, winning his second world title in Budapest.

Stahl threw 71.46m to win the world title &ndash; the third farthest mark of his career &ndash; but Ceh leads this season&rsquo;s top list with the 71.86m he threw in Johvi in June, matching Stahl&rsquo;s PB from 2019. While world bronze medallist Mykolas Alekna doesn&rsquo;t compete, his Lithuanian compatriot Andrius Gudzius, the 2017 world champion, does, along with Australia&rsquo;s Matthew Denny.
<h3>11:40 &ndash; men&rsquo;s long jump</h3>
There will be a new Diamond League champion in the men&rsquo;s long jump, where Jamaica&rsquo;s Tajay Gayle looks to build on his bronze in Budapest and Switzerland&rsquo;s Simon Ehammer hopes to rediscover his eight metre-plus form.
Among those entered, Ehammer has been the busiest on the Diamond League circuit this season, with world champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece not defending his title in Eugene. Ehammer won in Oslo and was second in Paris, but he was sixth on home soil in Zurich, where Gayle, continuing his comeback after injury, claimed the runner-up spot. The pair are separated by just 5cm on season&rsquo;s bests.
Looking to deny them in Eugene will be USA&rsquo;s 2017 world silver medallist Jarrion Lawson and national indoor champion William Williams, plus Bahamian LaQuan Nairn.
<h3>12:04 &ndash; men&rsquo;s 800m</h3>
Marco Arop &ndash; world bronze medallist at Hayward Field last year &ndash; unleashed a perfectly timed kick to win the world title in Budapest, then Kenya&rsquo;s 2021 world U20 champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi got one back by beating his Canadian rival in another thrilling finish in Xiamen. Their career head to head record stands at three apiece &ndash; who will end this season with the upper hand?
In an open field, the win could even go elsewhere, as they face Kenya&rsquo;s Commonwealth Games champion Wyclife Kinyamal, who won in Monaco and was second in Doha and Rabat, plus Algeria&rsquo;s Stockholm and Brussels winner Djamel Sedjati, and Benjamin Robert of France.
<h3>12:39 &ndash; women&rsquo;s 5000m</h3>
Kenya&rsquo;s defending champion Beatrice Chebet, the world cross country champion in Budapest earlier this year, has the chance to claim another title ahead of going for world 5km gold at the World Road Running Championships in Riga next month. There she will be joined by Ethiopia&rsquo;s world record-holder Ejgayehu Taye, world indoor 800m silver medallist Freweyni Hailu and Medina Eisa, plus Japan&rsquo;s Nozomi Tanaka, all of whom are also among her rivals in Eugene.
They will each be looking for a strong end to their track seasons but they will have to contend with Gudaf Tsegay, who won the world 5000m title the last time she raced at Hayward Field and then added the world 10,000m title to her CV in Budapest. They are joined on the start line by Australia&rsquo;s Jess Hull, USA&rsquo;s Alicia Monson and Kenya&rsquo;s Lilian Kasait Rengeruk.

<h3>12:44 &ndash; men&rsquo;s pole vault</h3>
There are a few events with standout favourites in Eugene and one of those is the men&rsquo;s pole vault. Sweden&rsquo;s Olympic and two-time world champion Mondo Duplantis set a world record of 6.21m at Hayward Field last year and improved again to 6.22m in Clermont-Ferrand in February. Now he goes for a third Diamond League title, up against another two-time trophy winner, USA&rsquo;s Sam Kendricks, who will be among those looking to capitalise if Duplantis strays from his usual fantastic form, as he did in Monaco where he finished fourth.
The win that day went to USA&rsquo;s Chris Nilsen, who claimed joint world bronze in Budapest, while the field also features Australia&rsquo;s Kurtis Marschall, with whom Nilsen shared that medal, plus Philippines&rsquo; world silver medallist Ernest Obiena.
<h3>13:04 &ndash; women&rsquo;s 400m hurdles</h3>
Dutch star Femke Bol is the clear No.1 on the circuit and barring incident, she should add a third Diamond trophy to her cabinet. Things don&rsquo;t always go to plan, but it&rsquo;s how athletes overcome those setbacks and after falling just before the finish in the mixed 4x400m relay at the World Championships in Budapest, Bol rebounded to win her first world 400m hurdles title and then anchored the women&rsquo;s 4x400m team to victory after a sensational final sprint.
She&rsquo;ll take the confidence from those performances &ndash; and her five Diamond League series wins this season &ndash; with her to Eugene, where she lines up alongside her fellow world medallists Shamier Little and Rushell Clayton, plus Clayton&rsquo;s Jamaican compatriot Rushell Clayton.&nbsp;
<h3>13:08 &ndash; women&rsquo;s discus</h3>
The women&rsquo;s discus has built to an exciting crescendo this season. Laulauga Tausaga claimed a surprise world title win ahead of her US compatriot Valarie Allman, the Olympic champion, by throwing 69.49m in Budapest and then Allman improved her world lead to 70.47m in Brussels before Croatian great Sandra Perkovic threw a season&rsquo;s best of 67.71m at her home Continental Tour Gold meeting in Zagreb.
That puts Perkovic in a strong position as she sets her sights on a seventh Diamond League title, but Allman is also looking for another trophy to add to her collection, after winning the last two finals, and has shown great consistency this year, while Tausaga goes for a maiden title as she contests the final for the first time.
<h3>13:17 &ndash; men&rsquo;s 3000m</h3>
Three Olympic champions clash &ndash; Norway&rsquo;s Jakob Ingebrigtsen (1500m), Uganda&rsquo;s Joshua Cheptegei (5000m) and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Selemon Barega (10,000m). All three (Ingebrigtsen with 5000m gold, Cheptegei with 10,000m gold and Barega with 10,000m bronze) also claimed medals at the World Championships in Budapest. As they meet in the middle at 3000m, it's all to fight for.
Then there&rsquo;s world 5km record-holder Berihu Aregawi, who won the 2021 Diamond League title in the 5000m, and his Ethiopian compatriots Hagos Gebrhiwet and Yomif Kejelcha, USA&rsquo;s Woody Kincaid, Guatemala&rsquo;s Luis Grijalva and USA&rsquo;s Grant Fisher, on his comeback after injury.
Making the battle even more intriguing is that Ingebrigtsen, who set a world two-mile best in Paris and a world 2000m record in Brussels, will be contesting his second final in two days after racing the mile at the end of day one.

<h3>13:37 &ndash; women&rsquo;s 400m</h3>
Dominican Republic&rsquo;s Marileidy Paulino lived up to expectation to win the one-lap title in Budapest and now she goes into the Diamond League final as favourite to retain the trophy she claimed for the first time in Zurich last year.
The Olympic silver medallist has gained three wins on the circuit this year &ndash; in Doha, Paris and Xiamen &ndash; but she was pipped into third by Poland&rsquo;s world silver medallist Natalia Kaczmarek and Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands in Silesia, and they will both be looking to spring another surprise, as will Barbadian Sada Williams, bronze medallist in Budapest.&nbsp;
<h3>13:42 &ndash; women&rsquo;s long jump</h3>
Serbia&rsquo;s Ivana Vuleta finally got the global gold she craved in Budapest &ndash; peaking with a world-leading leap of 7.14m when it mattered most. While a world senior outdoor title had eluded her until this year, the two-time world indoor champion has great experience of Diamond League success and will want that to continue in Eugene, where she targets trophy number five.
Looking to deny her will be Olympic bronze medallist Ese Brume of Nigeria, who claimed world silver in Oregon last year, plus USA&rsquo;s Quanesha Burks. Italy&rsquo;s Larissa Iapichino will not compete due to injury.
<h3>13:52 &ndash; men&rsquo;s 110m hurdles</h3>
The world champion and Olympic champion clash again, as USA&rsquo;s Grant Holloway goes up against Jamaica&rsquo;s Hansle Parchment on the hunt for his second Diamond League trophy. Holloway has had the more consistent series, winning in Florence, Paris and London before retaining his world title in Budapest, but he hit the last hurdle in Xiamen and had to settle for third behind Parchment and USA&rsquo;s Daniel Roberts, who joined that pair on the podium in the Hungarian capital last month and races them both again in Eugene.
The field features five US athletes, Holloway and Roberts joined by Jamal Britt, Freddie Crittenden and Cordell Tinch.
<h3>14:05 &ndash; women&rsquo;s 100m hurdles</h3>
The unexpected can always be expected in the sprint hurdles and after winning a surprise second world title after her first victory in 2015, Jamaica&rsquo;s Danielle Williams will aim to regain another honour and become a two-time Diamond League champion after her first victory in 2019.
All three world medallists feature in another strong field, with Puerto Rico&rsquo;s Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and USA&rsquo;s Kendra Harrison targeting their first Diamond trophy along with Nia Ali and Tobi Amusan.
<h3>14:09 &ndash; men&rsquo;s shot put</h3>
Can anything stop Ryan Crouser? After retaining the world title with a 23.51m championship record &ndash; just 5cm off his own world record &ndash; despite having two blood clots in his leg, the US shot put star will now want to regain the Diamond League title he lost to his compatriot Joe Kovacs last year.

Italy&rsquo;s Leonardo Fabbri split Crouser and Kovacs on the podium in Budapest after a 22.34m PB performance and he&rsquo;s also in the line up alongside the pair in Eugene, as is New Zealand&rsquo;s 2017 world champion Tom Walsh.
<h3>14:19 &ndash; women&rsquo;s 800m</h3>
Back at Hayward Field, the women&rsquo;s 800m offers the thrilling opportunity of an unexpected rematch between global medallists Mary Moraa, Keely Hodgkinson and Athing Mu.
Both Britain&rsquo;s Hodgkinson and Kenya&rsquo;s Moraa have one Diamond trophy apiece and it was always anticipated that they would go head to head on the hunt for a second, but Mu is now also in the mix as she races with a wild card entry and seeks revenge after being pipped into third by winner Moraa and runner-up Hodgkinson in Budapest. Mu won when they last raced in Oregon, taking the world title ahead of Hodgkinson and Moraa in 2022.
But it might not be just a three-way race as Britain&rsquo;s Jemma Reekie is in form and fresh from a road mile win in New York, while Jamaica&rsquo;s Natoya Goule-Toppin and Australia&rsquo;s Catrona Bissett will also want to challenge.
<h3>14:36 &ndash; men&rsquo;s 200m</h3>
World champion Noah Lyles has opted to race the 100m in Eugene, leaving world silver and bronze medallists &ndash; USA&rsquo;s Erriyon Knighton and Botswana&rsquo;s Letsile Tebogo &ndash; to battle for the half-lap title against five other sub-20 men.
They include USA&rsquo;s Kenny Bednarek, who won the Diamond trophy in 2021, plus Canada&rsquo;s Olympic champion Andre De Grasse and his compatriot Aaron Brown.
<h3>14:49 &ndash; women&rsquo;s 200m</h3>
Jamaica&rsquo;s Shericka Jackson has made no secret of the fact that she has the world 200m record of 21.34 set by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988 in her sights and now she has one more big stage opportunity on which to take it in 2023.

The two-time world champion clocked 21.41 to retain her title in Budapest, 21.45 to win her first world title at Hayward Field last year, and 21.48 to win in Brussels last month. She is edging closer and now has three of the four fastest times in 200m history to her name.

After 13 meetings from May to September, the final fields are now set as the Wanda Diamond League gets ready to crown its 2023 champions at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, this weekend (16-17).
The world&rsquo;s best athletes &ndash; including Faith Kipyegon and Noah Lyles, both of whom won two individual titles in Budapest last month &ndash; head to Hayward Field looking to end their seasons on a high, but the athletes who missed out on top honours in the Hungarian capital will be out for revenge.
Diamond trophies and top $30,000 prizes are up for grabs in the 32 finals taking place across the two days of action. The first 15 finals &ndash; 12 of which contain newly crowned world champions &ndash; will be contested on Saturday (16) and the remaining 17 on Sunday (17).
The majority of athletes qualified for the finals by earning points at the 13 series meetings, while others have been entered as national or global wild cards.
The first day of action is previewed below, while the day two preview will be published tomorrow (Friday).

<h3>10:50 &ndash; women&rsquo;s javelin</h3>
After throwing a world-leading national record of 67.38m to win in Brussels, world champion Haruka Kitaguchi of Japan said that 68 metres is her next target. And if recent major competitions are anything to go by, that could well happen in the final round.
Australia&rsquo;s world bronze medallist Mackenzie Little, Austria&rsquo;s Victoria Hudson and USA&rsquo;s Maggie Malone are all displaying strong end-of-season form, so should pose the biggest threat to Kitaguchi.
<h3>10:55 &ndash; men&rsquo;s high jump</h3>
In the absence of world champion Gianmarco Tamberi and Olympic champion Mutaz Barshim, USA&rsquo;s world silver medallist JuVaughn Harrison starts as the favourite. But world indoor champion Woo Sanghyeok poses a threat, as does New Zealand&rsquo;s Hamish Kerr.
<h3>11:06 &ndash; men&rsquo;s triple jump</h3>
World champion Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso takes on defending Diamond League champion Andy Diaz of Italy. Diaz got the better of Zango in Xiamen two weeks ago, winning with 17.43m, and he hasn&rsquo;t lost since the first Diamond League meeting of the season in Doha back in May.
<h3>12:04 &ndash; men&rsquo;s 400m hurdles</h3>
World and Olympic champion Karsten Warholm suffered a rare defeat over 400m hurdles at the Diamond League meeting in Zurich last week, with world silver medallist Kyron McMaster winning by 0.03 in 47.27. The duo will renew their rivalry this weekend, along with USA&rsquo;s Olympic silver medallist Rai Benjamin, who clocked 46.62 in Eugene earlier this year.

World silver and bronze medallists Matthew Hudson-Smith and Quincy Hall take on defending Diamond League champion Kirani James over one lap of the track. But USA&rsquo;s consistent Vernon Norwood and Jamaica&rsquo;s Rusheen McDonald could cause an upset.
<h3>12:20 &ndash; men&rsquo;s javelin</h3>
World and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra hopes to successfully defend his Diamond League title in Eugene, but he will also have one eye on the 90-metre barrier, having come so close to it on several occasions now.
Multiple world and Olympic medallist Jakub Vadlejch will once again most likely be a threat, while two-time world champion Anderson Peters will aim to end a frustrating season on a high.
<h3>12:26 &ndash; women&rsquo;s pole vault</h3>
On current form, very little separates USA&rsquo;s Katie Moon and Australia&rsquo;s Nina Kennedy &ndash; indeed, in Budapest they were quite literally inseparable and ended up sharing the gold medal. Moon is the Olympic champion, while Kennedy is the defending Diamond League champion. Kennedy got the upper hand in Zurich, which may fire up Moon as she competes on home soil.
World bronze medallist Wilma Murto of Finland is also one to watch, as are Slovenia&rsquo;s Tina Sutej and USA&rsquo;s Sandi Morris.
<h3>12:29 &ndash; women&rsquo;s 3000m steeplechase</h3>
Measured by World Championships placings, the women&rsquo;s steeplechase in Eugene is one of the highest quality events as it will reunite the top seven finishers from Budapest.
Winfred Yavi followed up her World Championships triumph with victory in Zurich, and here she&rsquo;ll be looking for her first ever Diamond trophy. But world record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech and her fellow Kenyans Faith Cherotich, the world bronze medallist, and Jackline Chepkoech will be tough to beat, so too will Ethiopia&rsquo;s Zerfe Wondemagegn, and Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai of Uganda.

<h3>12:49 &ndash; women&rsquo;s triple jump</h3>
The World Championships may not have been plain sailing for Yulimar Rojas, who managed to salvage gold on her final attempt in dramatic fashion, but the Venezuelan was back to her dominant best in Zurich at the end of August, winning with 15.15m.
Still, the close competition in Budapest will have given extra confidence to Rojas&rsquo;s rivals. The likes of Leyanis Perez Hernandez of Cuba, Jamaica&rsquo;s Shanieka Ricketts and Thea LaFond of Dominica could turn the tables with a surprise end-of-season victory of their own.
<h3>12:51 &ndash; women&rsquo;s 1500m</h3>
Faith Kipyegon is undefeated this year and the Kenyan will want to maintain that record in Eugene. She will also want to extend her Pre Classic winning streak, having won there four times (2016, 2017, 2021 and 2022).
Returning to the scene of her 2022 world title, the multiple world record-holder is contesting just the 1500m this weekend, taking on a field that includes world silver medallist Diribe Welteji, Olympic silver medallist Laura Muir, Irish record-holder Ciara Mageean, talented Ethiopians Freweyni Hailu, Birke Haylom, Hirut Meshesha and Worknesh Mesele, as well as Australian duo Jess Hull and Linden Hall.
<h3>13:07 &ndash; men&rsquo;s 100m</h3>
Noah Lyles is a man who has never been short of self-belief, and after winning three gold medals in Budapest his confidence is at an all-time high as he heads into what will be his first 100m race since the World Championships.
But there&rsquo;s still little room for error in a field that includes world silver medallist Letsile Tebogo, world leader Christian Coleman, African record-holder Ferdinand Omanyala, and Jamaican duo Kishane Thompson and Ackeem Blake &ndash; all of whom have season&rsquo;s bests below 9.90.
<h3>13:11 &ndash; women&rsquo;s shot put</h3>
Eugene&rsquo;s Hayward Field has typically been a happy hunting ground for Chase Ealey. It&rsquo;s where she set her lifetime best of 20.51m last year, and then one month later she won her first world title there.
She&rsquo;ll return there this week, now as a two-time world champion, and will be keen to banish memories of her last outing there in July when she finished fourth at the US Championships. Canada&rsquo;s Sarah Mitton, who finished second to Ealey in Budapest and Brussels, will once again provide stiff opposition, so too will world indoor champion Auriol Dongmo, USA&rsquo;s Maggie Ewen and Jamaica&rsquo;s Danniel Thomas-Dodd.

In the absence of world champion Soufiane El Bakalli and world record-holder Lamecha Girma, this race presents a great opportunity for the rest of the world's best steeplechasers.
World bronze medallist Abraham Kibiwot will line up against New Zealand&rsquo;s George Beamish, rising Kenyan talent Simon Kiprop Koech, Ethiopia&rsquo;s Getnet Wale and Japanese record-holder Ryuji Miura.
<h3>13:40 &ndash; women&rsquo;s 100m</h3>
World champion Sha&rsquo;Carri Richardson will take on world 200m champion Shericka Jackson in what will be their final 100m clash of the year.
Richardson has won all three of their 100m duels this year; in fact she has won all but one of her 100m races throughout the entire season. With the favourable sprint conditions witnessed in Eugene, she may even improve on her own world-leading 10.65.
Elaine Thompson-Herah, who holds the stadium record of 10.54, is rounding into good end-of-season form, while Marie-Josee Ta Lou is always a threat.
<h3>13:50 &ndash; men&rsquo;s mile</h3>
As is tradition at the Prefontaine Classic, the Bowerman Mile is held in lieu of the men&rsquo;s 1500m. Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, meeting record-holder at 3:47.24, is looking to become the first man to win three consecutive Bowerman Miles.
The Norwegian, who suffered another surprise 1500m defeat at the recent World Championships, is doubling up in Eugene and will contest the 3000m on Sunday, but his first task is in the shorter event where he&rsquo;ll face compatriot Narve Gilje Nordas, who took bronze behind Ingebrigtsen in Budapest, Kenya&rsquo;s Abel Kipsang, US champion Yared Nuguse, rising Dutch talent Niels Laros, Kenyan teenager Reynold Kipkorir Cheruiyot, Spain&rsquo;s Mario Garcia, USA&rsquo;s Cole Hocker and current world mile leader George Mills of Great Britain.

Kipyegon and Lyles among world champions in action on day one of Diamond League Final

Brussels&rsquo; re-vamped King Baudouin Stadium, with its super-fast new track, was able to celebrate a world record on Friday (8) in the penultimate Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season &ndash; courtesy of the endlessly talented Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the men&rsquo;s 2000m.
On a night when Jamaica&rsquo;s Shericka Jackson, hoping to get closer to &ndash; or even past &ndash; the women&rsquo;s world 200m record of 21.34, had to settle for a Diamond League record of 21.48, the 22-year-old Norwegian won his battle with the clock over the final 600 metres to set a new mark of 4:43.13.
Sweden&rsquo;s world and Olympic pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis, the centre of attention at the end of a hot and humid evening, then had three efforts at improving his world record to 6.23m, the last of them tantalisingly close.
Ingebrigtsen&rsquo;s victory tonight was a first outdoor world record for the 22-year-old Norwegian, who set a world indoor 1500m record of 3:30.60 last year and, at this season&rsquo;s Paris Diamond League meeting, ran a two miles world best of 7:54.10.
After the huge blow of a second successive defeat to a Briton in a world 1500m final Ingebrigtsen, who said at the time he had been feeling under par, has re-grouped in a spectacular way, recovering in Budapest to retain his world 5000m title and then taking time out back home in Sandnes before venturing out for more mythical activity.
As he lined up, Ingebrigtsen raised a single finger into the air &ndash; and there was certainly no wind for him to be testing.

The pace target for the halfway mark was 2:21, but the time had drifted out at that point to 2:22.28. Ingebrigtsen, however, looked calm and comfortable, and after the last pacer moved aside with just over 600 metres remaining, the redoubtable Norwegian was off on his solo mission.
The crowd roared and rose to him as he drove around the final bend in his quest to erase the formidable mark of 4:44.79 set in Berlin in 1999 by Morocco&rsquo;s Hicham El Guerrouj &ndash; whose outdoor world records for the 1500m (3:26.00) and mile (3:43.13) the prodigiously talented young Norwegian already covets.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s always fun to break a record,&rdquo; Ingebrigtsen said. &ldquo;This one qualifies as a world record and not as a world best. I knew I was able to break this one, but I had some kind of virus 10 days ago and I didn&rsquo;t really know how I would be feeling today.
&ldquo;However, I felt really good and ran a good race. To be honest, this record wasn&rsquo;t a difficult one for me. Sure, when you have to do it alone, it&rsquo;s really tough, but I got great help from the pacemakers. Actually they were able to help me more than I expected.&rdquo;
A rarely-run distance yielded riches for many of those in Ingebrigtsen&rsquo;s wake. Reynold Cheruiyot was second in a world U20 best and senior Kenyan record of 4:48.14, with Australia&rsquo;s Stewart McSweyn setting an Oceanian record of 4:48.77 in third place, and Dutch rising talent Niels Laros, 18, finishing fourth in a European U20 record of 4:49.68.
There was a Spanish record of 4:49.85 for fifth-placed Mario Garcia, a personal best of 4:50.64 for Norway&rsquo;s world 1500m bronze medallist Narve Nordas, a North American record of 4:51.54 for Canada&rsquo;s Charles Philibert-Thiboutot and a Belgian record of 4:52.37 for Ruben Verheyden.
Jackson had described herself before this race as &ldquo;right there, so close, knocking on the door&rdquo; of the world 200m record of 21.34 set by the late Florence Griffith-Joyner of the United States in winning the 1988 Olympic title.
She remains on the doorway after another massively impressive performance that fell just short of her ambitions as she clocked a time 0.07 slower than the one she produced to retain the world title last month.

Even what she had described as the &ldquo;Jamaican weather&rdquo; proved insufficient to get her over the threshold. But as she also reminded everyone on the eve of the racing, if she was not successful here, she had &ldquo;another shot&rdquo; at the Diamond League final in Eugene from September 16 to 17. That is going to be a shot worth witnessing&hellip;
On the night she was followed home by Anthonique Strachan of The Bahamas in 22.31 and Jenna Prandini of the United States in 22.47.
&ldquo;You just have to put in your best and that&rsquo;s what I did today,&rdquo; said Jackson, who now owns three of the four fastest times in history. &ldquo;It felt really good tonight, I definitely feel like I&rsquo;m getting there, closer to that record. But it&rsquo;s also important to have some fun and I really had fun tonight.
&ldquo;It has been a good season and I hope to get one more win and to get closer to that record.&rdquo;
Duplantis, whose single outdoor defeat last season took place here, ensured there would be no repeat of that occurrence on the smooth new run-up since installed.
First-time clearances of 5.62m, 5.82m and 5.92m were enough to see off all but the lingering challenges of Sam Kendricks, the 2017 and 2019 world champion from the United States, and world silver medallist Ernest John Obiena of the Philippines.

Kendricks, enjoying renewed form at the tail end of the season, was a thankful figure after going over 5.82m first time, but that was his limit; Obiena was also unable to progress further, finishing third.
Having delivered the coup de grace with a first-time clearance of 6.02m, world and Olympic champion Duplantis moved the bar up to 6.10m, just two centimetres shy of the world lead he set in Ostrava, and flipped over without a problem.
On, inevitably, excitingly to the world record mark of 6.23m, one centimetre higher than he achieved indoors at Clermont-Ferrand on 25 February.
His preferred musical start-up &ndash; Loading, by Central Cee &ndash; was duly broadcast. Attempt one was a no-no; attempt two was close. His third attempt on an evening when the temperature was dropping, admittedly to 27C, and a breath of wind arriving, was even closer.
Duplantis&rsquo;s face was utter determination as he approached. It seemed he had it, the bar bending down into a rueful smile and hanging on for a moment before joining him on the landing mat.
"I have mixed feelings," said Duplantis. "The track is really great and I would have loved giving the public the world record, but to be honest my jumps were bad today. Even that last attempt on 6.23m &ndash; it was close, but it wasn't a great jump. I really believe that I should have made it today. I had it in me to jump the world record today and I really thought that I was going to do it."
Dutch world 400m hurdles champion Femke Bol won in 52.11, shattering the meeting record of 53.54 run here in 1998 by Morocco&rsquo;s double world champion Nezha Bidouane.
Bol made her move around the final bend and emerged with narrow lead on the finishing straight which had changed to a distant lead by the line, with Jamaican runners Janieve Russell and world bronze medallist Rushell Clayton second and third in 53.80 and 54.10 respectively.

&ldquo;It was my first Brussels Diamond League meeting and I loved it so much,&rdquo; Bol said. &ldquo;The crowd was amazing. So loud. It was like being at home.
&ldquo;My time was pretty good for the end of a season, especially knowing that my first few hurdles did not go that great. It is my second best performance in a Diamond League this year and my third fastest time.&rdquo;
Haruka Kitaguchi, who won the world javelin title last month by taking the lead with her sixth throw, produced a similar flourish here as her final effort went out to a world-leading Japanese record of 67.38m &ndash; and was clearly a source of delight.
This time, however, an athlete whose emotions are always on display had already secured what would have been a winning lead with her second-round throw of 65.20m. Austria&rsquo;s Victoria Hudson was second with a season&rsquo;s best of 64.65m, while Colombia&rsquo;s world silver medallist Flor Denis Ruiz Hurtado had to settle for fourth place on 62.51m.
&ldquo;I still have some goals to chase this season,&rdquo; said Kitaguchi. &ldquo;I hope to throw over 68 metres &ndash; maybe at the Diamond League final.&rdquo;

Ukraine&rsquo;s 21-year-old world champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh was a convincing winner of the women&rsquo;s high jump, concluding with first-time clearances of 1.97m and 2.00m, but was unable to improve upon that, despite having three shots at 2.04m.
It was a grand night for Serbia&rsquo;s 18-year-old Angelina Topic, who equalled her national record of 1.97m to claim second place ahead of Australia&rsquo;s 2022 world champion Eleanor Patterson, who cleared 1.94m.
Kenny Bednarek of the United States won the men&rsquo;s 200m in a season&rsquo;s best of 19.79 from Britain&rsquo;s world 100m bronze medallist Zharnel Hughes, who clocked 19.82, Canada&rsquo;s Olympic champion Andre De Grasse, with a season&rsquo;s best of 19.89, and his teammate Aaron Brown, fourth in 19.98, also a season&rsquo;s best.
There were season&rsquo;s bests also in the women&rsquo;s 100m for Jamaica&rsquo;s double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, who clocked 10.84, and second-placed compatriot Natasha Morrison, who ran 10.95, with third place going to Britain&rsquo;s Dina Asher-Smith in 10.97.
The women&rsquo;s 1500m lived up to its promise of being a hugely competitive event given the presence of the five women who had followed home the medallists in Budapest.
And it was Britain&rsquo;s Olympic silver medallist Laura Muir, fifth in the world final, who won here after taking the lead at the bell and hanging on in characteristically determined fashion to hold off the continued challenge of Ciara Mageean down the back straight, round the final bend and down the straight.
Muir won in a season&rsquo;s best of 3:55.34, moving her up to sixth on this year&rsquo;s world list, with Mageean clocking an Irish record of 3:55.87 and Kenya&rsquo;s Nelly Chepchirchir third in 3:56.93 from Jessica Hull of Australia, who recorded 3:57.75.
Jamaica&rsquo;s Shanieka Ricketts won the women&rsquo;s triple jump with a third-round personal best of 15.01m, finally breaking through the 15-metre barrier after notching up seven competitions beyond 14.90m since 2019.
Ukraine&rsquo;s European champion and world silver medallist Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk was second on 14.57m from Thea Lafond of Dominica, who reached 14.49m.
Algeria&rsquo;s Djamel Sedjati powered home to win the men&rsquo;s 800m in 1:43.60 from France&rsquo;s Yanis Meziane, whose personal best of 1:43.94 will already be raising hopes for a national team that came away from Budapest with just one medal and with a huge weight of expectation ahead at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Kenya&rsquo;s Lilian Rengeruk won the women&rsquo;s 5000m in 14:26.46 from Medina Eisa of Ethiopia on 14:28.94, with Japan&rsquo;s Nozomi Tanaka setting a national record of 14:29.18 in third place.&nbsp;
The concluding track event, the men&rsquo;s 400m, was won by Jamaica&rsquo;s Rusheen McDonald in 44.84 from Alexander Ogando of the Dominican Republic in 44.93.
Serbia&rsquo;s world champion Ivana Vuleta won the women&rsquo;s long jump with 6.74m, but Dutch Paralympian Fleur Jong finishing second on countback with the same mark.
There was cause for further celebration as the opening track event of the Diamond League programme, the women&rsquo;s 400m, went to home athlete Cynthia Bolingo, fifth in the world final, who moved past Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands in the final strides to clock 50.09, winning by 0.07.

Chase Ealey, who retained her world shot put title in Budapest with a winning fifth-round throw to finish ahead of Canada&rsquo;s Sarah Mitton, did likewise here in the Place de la Monnaie to win the honours at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Brussels on Thursday (7).
After her triumphant, penultimate launch, the amiable US thrower stood with both arms aloft, twirling, after what she knew was a competition-leading throw. She wasn&rsquo;t wrong: 20.05m.
Her final effort &ndash; the first of three final throws &ndash; was big. A big foul, unfortunately.
Mitton ended her series with 19.64m, which, when Maggie Ewen&rsquo;s final throw of the competition bounced up and away on the bright green artificial throwing area and registered as a foul, left her in the same position she had finished in Budapest&hellip;

&ldquo;It took me a little bit of time to warm up,&rdquo; Ealey said. &ldquo;I couldn&rsquo;t quite feel the ball, I haven&rsquo;t trained in a while. So it just took a little longer.&rdquo;
What had earlier been referred to by world 200m champion Shericka Jackson as &ldquo;Jamaican weather&rdquo; did its bit to encourage a sizeable crowd of onlookers to the competition area laid out at the end of one of Brussels&rsquo; main pedestrian shopping areas.
Unlike in Budapest, where Ealey led from the first round, this time Mitton began as if she had a point to prove, taking a first-round lead with 19.69m and extending it to 19.76m in the next round.
Ewen (19.64m) and Auriol Dongmo (19.25m) occupied the two other podium places in the early stages.
A first-round 19.20m, meanwhile, kept Ealey in touch in fourth place.
Mitton&rsquo;s fourth effort, which produced some noise, looked big &ndash; but the judge at the circle was already waving a finger in the air to indicate a foul.
Meanwhile, the two-time world champion was fully engaged, but still free to offer a big hug to her US teammate Jessica Woodard, whose third and final effort of 18.82m was not enough to elevate her from ninth place, but was a season&rsquo;s best with which she was transparently happy.
Ealey pushed on to the podium with a fourth-round effort of 19.51m.
The best was still to come.

Ealey earns Brussels shot put honours in Budapest re-run 

A &ldquo;super-fast&rdquo; track in the newly renovated King Baudouin Stadium will offer several of the sport&rsquo;s stellar performers &ndash; notably Shericka Jackson, Femke Bol and Mondo Duplantis &ndash; special motivation for the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Brussels on Friday (8) and world records could be in prospect.
Meeting director Kim Gevaert announced this week that she was &ldquo;super-happy&rdquo; with the work that has been done on a track whose forgiving curvature has always encouraged fast times for 200m and 400m runners in particular.
&ldquo;The track at the King Baudouin Stadium has always been a good track, but it was really worn down to the bone,&rdquo; Gevaert said. &ldquo;It was high time for a new one. It was fine for sprinters, but the old track had become too hard for distance runners.&rdquo;
What that will mean for talents who still have times on their minds in the penultimate Diamond League meeting of the season remains to be seen &ndash; and savoured.
A world record is very much on the mind of Jackson, who retained her world 200m title last month.
After taking gold in 21.41, the second fastest time ever run and just 0.07 off the world record set by the late Florence Griffith-Joyner of the United States at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the powerful Jamaican looked just a little cast down when she saw her time.
She revealed why afterwards: &ldquo;Honestly, when I crossed the line and saw the time, I said aaahhh, I&rsquo;m close, I&rsquo;m close. I wrote down two times on my bib today. The slowest I wrote was 21.40 and I got 21.41. I just wanted to see the race before I celebrated because I didn&rsquo;t know if it was wind-legal.&rdquo;
Jackson refused to say if the second target was a world record &ndash; but one can only assume so. So eyes firmly peeled for this race&hellip;
It&rsquo;s worth noting that the second fastest 200m of all time by a man was run in this same stadium in 2011 when Yohan Blake of Jamaica clocked 19.26.
Of Jackson&rsquo;s rivals, only USA&rsquo;s Jenna Prandini has run under 22 seconds (21.89). But the field contains strong competitors such as Anthonique Strachan of The Bahamas, who has a best of 22.15, and Britain&rsquo;s Darryl Neita, who lowered her personal best to 22.16 in Budapest.
Speaking at the pre-event press conference, Jackson commented: &ldquo;At the World Championships I was so close to the world record. Just a little wind and I would have been the world record-holder. But my coach and I have spoken and we are going after it this year. I hope to get it tomorrow. And if I do, then that will probably ease a little pressure off me going into Eugene. But if not, we have another shot at Eugene.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s no perfect race but I just want to run a good race tomorrow and put everything in place, because we are right there, we are so close, we are knocking on the door. And tomorrow we will have Jamaican weather - and it&rsquo;s a new track. Tomorrow is definitely supposed to be one of those good days! My mind is feeling good, my body is ready, and that&rsquo;s the best thing I can put together. Anything is possible tomorrow."
Puerto Rico&rsquo;s Olympic 100m hurdles champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, who has a best of 22.27, is also in the field.&nbsp; But the great likelihood is that the main contest will be between Jackson and the clock.
World 400m hurdles champion Bol, unbeaten this year in her frequent races over her signature event, will seek to trouble the personal best of 51.45 she set in London in July. What has she got left for 2023?

Also in the mix will be Jamaica&rsquo;s Rushell Clayton, who will be seeking to improve upon the personal best of 52.81 that earned her bronze in Budapest.
This will be a first appearance in Brussels for Bol, although she has attended previous editions in support of her boyfriend, Belgian pole vaulter Ben Broeders.
&ldquo;I love the atmosphere in Brussels, and I know the track is really nice now and I am looking forward to it.&rdquo;
Asked about tomorrow, and whether she viewed breaking the 25-year-old meeting record of 53.43 as &ldquo;a piece of cake&rdquo;, she responded: &ldquo;It&rsquo;s never easy at the end of the season. Your body feels tired, but there is less pressure and this is almost a home meet for me. I am looking forward to running and I am feeling really good about it.&rdquo;
Meanwhile, with his pole vault world title safely &ndash; and simply &ndash; retained, Duplantis is on the hunt for a seventh consecutive world record on a surface which might complement his already highly respectable flat speed.
Sweden&rsquo;s 23-year-old Olympic champion set his first mark of 6.17m in February 2020, and his most recent effort of 6.22m in February of this year. The next centimetre gain seems only a matter of time.
Of his six world records, all but one &ndash; the 6.21m he set at last year&rsquo;s World Athletics Championships in Oregon &ndash; have been set indoors. But will he buck the trend in Brussels?
Brussels is one of eight Diamond League meetings at which he holds the meeting record, thanks to a 6.05m jump back in 2021.

He will have to maintain full concentration to secure a win, however, given the presence of the world silver medallist Ernest John Obiena of the Philippines, who holds the Asian record of 6.00m, and the joint bronze medallists from Budapest, Chris Nilsen of the United States and Australia&rsquo;s Kurtis Marschall, who set a personal best of 5.95m to claim his medal.
Watch out also for USA&rsquo;s Sam Kendricks, the two-time world champion, who returned to his form of two years ago with a 5.95m clearance in Zurich last Thursday.
&ldquo;I haven&rsquo;t been to the track yet, I&rsquo;ve heard some lovely things about it,&rdquo; Duplantis told the press conference. &ldquo;It was probably about that time maybe for them to do something with it,&rdquo; said Duplantis, who had two good efforts at a world record of 6.23m at last week&rsquo;s Diamond League meeting in Zurich.
&ldquo;But the stadium itself is fantastic, the crowd is fantastic, and it looks like we are going to have some good weather as well so it seems like its adding up to all the right pieces there to do something really nice.
&ldquo;And I actually feel quite well and I feel like I have some big bars in me. I have two competitions left in the season so I am going to try to hit it as hard as I possibly can and leave something high up there.&rdquo;
At the age of 21, Yaroslava Mahuchikh has just won her first outdoor global high jump gold, four years after winning the first of two world silvers in Doha.
And the prodigiously talented Ukrainian, who also won Olympic bronze and finished last year as world indoor and Diamond League champion, is finishing her season strongly, having equalled the world lead of 2.02m set by Australia&rsquo;s Nicola Olyslagers at last Saturday&rsquo;s Diamond League meeting in Xiamen.
The Ukrainian&rsquo;s outdoor best of 2.05m came at last year&rsquo;s Brussels meeting, so the vibes will be good on Friday. But the competition will be tough, because Australia&rsquo;s 2022 world champion Eleanor Patterson, who earned silver in Budapest, will be present, along with World Championships fourth-place finisher Morgan Lake and prodigious 18-year-old Serb Angelina Topic.
Mahuchikh - who has lived in Belgium for two years after fleeing Ukraine and regards the country as her &ldquo;second home&rdquo; - confirmed at the press conference that a world record is now her focus after earning her country&rsquo;s first world gold in a decade.
&ldquo;To do this for my country in this difficult time is extremely important,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It gives happiness to our people and to our soldiers.
&ldquo;I made some world record attempts last year, and with a new track it might be possible in Brussels.
&ldquo;Of course I think everything is possible, and we have limits only in our minds, so I hope and I want to try again for the world record for tomorrow. It is all in the mind.&rdquo;
Without the superhuman Yulimar Rojas in the field, Ukraine&rsquo;s European champion and world silver medallist Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk will be the favourite in the women&rsquo;s triple jump. Jamaica&rsquo;s Shanieka Ricketts, who has managed 14.93m this year, will be ready for any slips.
Norway&rsquo;s Olympic 1500m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen will be making his first appearance since his draining efforts at the World Championships. But apparently a world record is also on his mind in the rarely-run 2000m distance&nbsp;&ndash; a record of 4:44.79 set in 1999 by the Moroccan who also holds the world 1500m record to which the Norwegian aspires: Hicham El Guerrouj.
After being overtaken on the final bend and beaten to the line by a Briton in the 1500m final for a second successive year &ndash; after which he complained of having been below par with a bug and a sore throat &ndash; Ingebrigtsen found the health and strength to retain his world 5000m title against a hugely competitive field.
The 22-year-old phenomenon will return to the rarely raced distance of the 2000m to take on a field that includes Narve Gilje Nordas, his compatriot who finished just 0.03 behind Ingebrigtsen to take 1500m bronze in Budapest.

Also in the hunt will be Kenya&rsquo;s Abel Kipsang and the Netherlands&rsquo; fast-rising 18-year-old Niels Laros, 10th in the world 1500m final in a national record of 3:31.25.
Japan&rsquo;s Haruka Kitaguchi will face the opponent she beat to world javelin gold with her last throw in Budapest, Flor Ruiz Hurtado.
It looked as if the Colombian was on for a historic victory thanks to her opening effort of 65.47m, a South American record, but Kitaguchi produced a grand finale of 66.73m to claim her first senior global title.
There will be similar rivalry in the women&rsquo;s shot put, where Chase Ealey of the United States will face Sarah Mitton, the Canadian she beat to gold in the Hungarian capital. Four other finalists from Budapest, included fourth-placed Auriol Dongmo of Portugal, are involved in a contest set to take place in Brussels city centre, a day before the main programme.
Britain&rsquo;s surprise world 800m bronze medallist Ben Pattison will have his work cut out against a field that includes eight men who have run faster than his personal best of 1:44.02, including fellow Brit Daniel Rowden, Bryce Hoppel of the United States and Kenya&rsquo;s Wyclife Kinyamal.
The men&rsquo;s 400m will also be a compelling spectacle given the presence of world silver medallist Matthew Hudson-Smith, who ran a European record of 44.26 in the semifinals in Budapest. The field will also include Jamaican record-holder Rusheen McDonald, the fastest in the field this year with 44.03, and Norway&rsquo;s 20-year-old Havard Bentdal Ingvaldsen, who set a national record of 44.39 in Budapest.
While none of the world medallists are in the field for the women&rsquo;s 1500m, the Brussels version looks replete with potential drama given the presence of the next five women home.
Ireland&rsquo;s Ciara Mageean, fourth in Budapest in an Irish record of 3:56.61, fifth-placed Nelly Chepchirchir of Kenya, Britons Laura Muir and the fast-rising Katie Snowden, sixth and eighth respectively, and Australia&rsquo;s seventh-placed Jessica Hull look likely to produce one of the most competitive races of the evening.
Jamaica&rsquo;s double Olympic 100m and 200m champion Elaine Thompson-Herah has had one of her more difficult years, but it will be fascinating to see what she will do in an event that also contains Britain&rsquo;s 2019 world 200m champion Dina Asher-Smith.&nbsp;
World 100m bronze medallist Zharnel Hughes, who finished fourth in the world 200m final, will be keen to see if the super-fast new track can help him improve on the British record of 19.73 he set in the longer sprint earlier this season.
The field includes three other world finalists in Kenny Bednarek of the United States, Canada&rsquo;s Olympic champion Andre De Grasse, and Joseph Fahnbulleh of Liberia.
Intriguingly, Kenya&rsquo;s world 800m champion Mary Moraa will step down to the 400m &ndash; in which she has a very respectable best of 50.38 &ndash; against a field that includes world bronze medallist Sada Williams of Barbados. Also lining up in this event is USA&rsquo;s world 400m hurdles silver medallist Shamier Little, who set a PB of 49.68 in this event earlier this year.
Ethiopia&rsquo;s Medina Eisa, who set a world U20 record of 14:16.54 in London this season, looks the favourite for an interesting mix of talents in the women&rsquo;s 5000m.

Speedy new track offers opportunity for Jackson, Bol and Duplantis in Brussels

There were mixed fortunes for the recently crowned world champions in action at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Xiamen, where Hansle Parchment, Feng Bin and Emmanuel Wanyonyi were among the winners at an event that offered a series of thrilling rematches.
The men&rsquo;s 110m hurdles closed the programme at the Egret Stadium on Saturday (2) as Xiamen hosted the first Diamond League meeting in China since 2019. It proved to be a fitting finale, as the top four from the recent World Athletics Championships in Budapest all took to the start line.
Much of the focus was on USA&rsquo;s Grant Holloway, who claimed a third consecutive world title in Hungary, and he got a good start. But under pressure from Jamaica&rsquo;s Olympic champion Parchment in the lane next to him, and USA&rsquo;s Daniel Roberts in the lane beyond that, Holloway hit the last hurdle hard and did well to stay on his feet. Parchment edged ahead and dipped over the finish line to win in 12.96 &ndash; just 0.02 off both his PB from 2014 and the world leading mark set by Rasheed Broadbell in July &ndash; as Roberts came through for second in 13.03 and Holloway held on for third in 13.12.
It was a repeat of the podium finishers in Budapest, where Parchment secured silver behind Holloway and Roberts bagged bronze ahead of his US compatriot Freddie Crittenden, who placed sixth in Xiamen.
The men&rsquo;s 800m also featured a clash of world medallists and this time the result was the fastest performance in the world this year and a victory for World Championships runner up Wanyonyi of Kenya.
Canada&rsquo;s Marco Arop timed his kick to perfection to win the world title but on this occasion he didn&rsquo;t quite have enough to hold off a determined Wanyonyi, who dropped back slightly down the home straight but found the edge on approach to the finish line, clocking a PB of 1:43.20 to win by 0.04. Benjamin Robert of France finished third in 1:43.88, while Britain&rsquo;s Ben Pattison, who joined Arop and Wanyonyi on the podium in Budapest, was ninth this time in 1:44.87.
A world medallist also prevailed in an exciting women&rsquo;s discus contest that ended with a last-gasp win by China&rsquo;s Feng on home soil.

Croatia&rsquo;s multiple global champion Sandra Perkovic opened with a strong season&rsquo;s best of 67.32m to make a statement after finishing fifth in the world final and she backed that up with 67.30m in round two. But Feng, the 2022 world champion who gained bronze in Budapest, saved her best for last and launched the implement 67.41m to snatch the win by just 9cm. USA&rsquo;s world champion Laulauga Tausaga, who threw a PB of 69.49m to win in Budapest, this time recorded 64.31m to finish third.
There was no such challenge in the women&rsquo;s high jump, as Ukraine&rsquo;s world champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh overcame a scare at 1.95m &ndash; which she cleared on her third and final attempt &ndash; and went on to equal the world lead with her season's best clearance of 2.02m, to win by 10cm.
Mahuchikh had the competition won with that clearance of 1.95m and she then soared over 1.98m first time before passing at 2.00m and managing 2.02m, also on her first try, before calling it a day. Slovenia&rsquo;s Lia Apostolovski, who was ninth in the world final, finished second this time thanks to her 1.92m clearance, while Eleanor Patterson, the silver medallist in Budapest, finished third on countback after clearing the same height.

Serbia&rsquo;s Ivana Vuleta backed up her first world outdoor title win with another victory, leaping 6.88m to lead the women's long jump ahead of Burkina Faso&rsquo;s Marthe Koala and Nigeria&rsquo;s Ese Brume. Vuleta soared a world-leading 7.14m to add gold in Budapest to the world indoor crowns she claimed in Birmingham and Belgrade and the 33-year-old now has her eye on winning a fifth Diamond League trophy.
Vuleta&rsquo;s best mark came in the fifth round and four of her other jumps also surpassed 6.70m. Koala secured the runner up spot with 6.79m and Brume was third with 6.71m.
The men&rsquo;s triple jump was won by Italy&rsquo;s Andy Diaz Hernandez, who leapt 17.43m in the final round. He narrowly led the contest with 17.25m from his second attempt but built on that with his final jump, with world champion Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso settling for second place with a best of 17.22m.
The world lead was equalled in the men&rsquo;s 100m, Christian Coleman rebounding after his fifth-place finish in the world final to win in 9.83m. That matched the best so far this year achieved by world champion Noah Lyles to win in Budapest and world bronze medallist Zharnel Hughes, who ran the world-leading time in June.
Racing as part of a 10-strong field, Coleman got a good start and managed to hold off the fast-finishing Kishane Thompson of Jamaica, who dipped for a PB of 9.85 from lane 10. USA&rsquo;s Fred Kerley, the 2022 world champion, was third in 9.96, while Italy&rsquo;s Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs was seventh in 10.05, equalling his season&rsquo;s best. Jamaica&rsquo;s Ackeem Blake suffered a fall at the start.
Kenya&rsquo;s world 5000m bronze medallist Beatrice Chebet was a class apart in the women's 3000m, claiming a clear win in a world-leading PB of 8:24.05. The 23-year-old, who won the world cross country title in Bathurst in February and then added 5000m bronze in Budapest to the silver medal she claimed in Oregon last year, finished four seconds ahead of Mexico&rsquo;s Laura Galvan, who took more than 12 seconds off her national record with 8:28.05.
Chebet had looked in control, even when Galvan pushed the pace and led at the bell. Chebet kicked past her off the penultimate curve and strode away, with Galvan holding on for second place ahead of Kenya&rsquo;s Margaret Akidor, who clocked a PB of 8:29.88 in third. A total of 10 athletes ran PBs in the race.
Ethiopia&rsquo;s world indoor 800m medallist Freweyni Hailu launched a well-timed attack in the women&rsquo;s 1500m, claiming the win in 3:56.56 ahead of Kenya&rsquo;s Nelly Chepchirchir, Australia&rsquo;s Linden Hall and Britain&rsquo;s Melissa Courtney-Bryant, as the top four all dipped under four minutes.

Hailu, who finished seventh in the world 5000m final in Budapest, was ahead as the pacemaker dropped out with 500m to go. Chepchirchir then kicked past her with 250m remaining but Hailu had more in reserve and challenged again, running wide off the final bend. Chepchirchir ran a PB of 3:56.72 for the runner up spot.
Morocco&rsquo;s Soufiane El Bakkali was among the world champions in action, fresh from retaining his 3000m steeplechase title in Budapest, and he again asserted his dominance. Untroubled, he even had time to slow to a jog as he reached the finish line, which he crossed with 8:10.31 on the clock, his arms raised in celebration. He was followed by Ethiopia&rsquo;s world U20 silver medallist Samuel Firewu in 8:11.29, with Kenya&rsquo;s Amos Serem a few seconds back in third in 8:14.41.
The main track programme kicked off with a brilliant battle in the men&rsquo;s 400m. Grenada&rsquo;s Kirani James, the 2011 world champion and 2012 Olympic gold medallist, held off USA&rsquo;s world bronze medallist Quincy Hall by thousands of a second, both athletes recording 44.38 &ndash; a meeting record and a season&rsquo;s best for James &ndash; with James getting the nod in a photo finish. Jamaica&rsquo;s Rusheen McDonald finished third in 44.82.

Marileidy Paulino&rsquo;s win in the women&rsquo;s 400m was much more decisive, the world champion of the Dominican Republic running 49.36 to finish well clear ahead of Jamaica&rsquo;s Candice McLeod and USA&rsquo;s Lynna Irby-Jackson, who respectively clocked 50.19 and 50.45. World bronze medallist Sada Williams finished fourth in 50.95.
Rushell Clayton, the bronze medallist in Budapest, won the women&rsquo;s 400m hurdles in 53.56, leading a Jamaican top three ahead of Andrenette Knight (53.87) and Janieve Russell (54.01).

Parchment, Feng and Wanyonyi among winners on night of rematches in Xiamen

From the peak of the World Championships there is only one way to go, so the Weltklasse meeting in Zurich, taking place just four days after the championships finished, shaped as a potential trip hazard for the 12 world champions who turned out as the Wanda Diamond League resumed tonight (31).
Eight of them avoided the obvious danger, and maintained that winning feeling in front of the usual packed house of 25,000 passionate fans at the Letzigrund Stadium
Triple world sprint champion Noah Lyles loves a big crowd and was lifted by their energy as he faced a world championships-final strength field in the 200m to crown the night.
Lyles was challenged by the young pretender to the title, world silver medallist Erriyon Knighton, but prevailed in 19.80. Knighton was less than a metre behind (19.87) with Zharnel Hughes a close third (19.94).

&ldquo;Everybody wants to beat me and everybody wants the cake and the crown, but I am not giving it to them,&rdquo; Lyles said. &ldquo;Today, we did not have perfect conditions, it was pretty cold. But a win is a win.&rdquo;
Sha&rsquo;Carri Richardson also began her reign as the world&rsquo;s fastest woman in fine style, dominating the women&rsquo;s 100m to win in 10.88 on a cool night, less than ideal for sprinters.
&ldquo;I am feeling really good for being able to finish this season as fast as I can,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I am definitely grateful, and I am excited with the way this season is going. Today, I felt like I executed, and I felt good about my performance.&rdquo;
Jamaican duo Natasha Morrison and Elaine Thompson-Herah (both 11.00) followed her home. That was a season&rsquo;s best for dual Olympic champion Thompson-Herah, who is only now finding her form with less than a month remaining of the international outdoor season.
World 200m champion Shericka Jackson remained supreme in her preferred event, winning by four metres (21.82) from Britain&rsquo;s Daryll Neita (22.25) and Kayla White (22.33).
The women&rsquo;s 100m hurdles is arguably the most competition event on the track at the moment, but Jamaican Danielle Williams also backed up her Budapest victory, triumphing in 12.54 from US duo Alaysha Johnson (12.58) and Kendra Harrison (12.59).

Many athletes did not know quite what to expect in Zurich but hoped that their peak form would hold up against any lingering mental and physical fatigue.
That worked better for some than others.
Triple world 400m hurdles champion Karsten Warholm suffered an unexpected defeat at the hands of world silver medallist Kyron McMaster, whose aggressive opening 200m put the Norwegian master off his game.
McMaster made up the stagger on Warholm in half a lap, forcing the favourite to chase him as they rounded into the home straight. Warholm fought back and they were even at the final hurdle but McMaster held on for a narrow but well-deserved victory in 47.27, just 0.03 ahead of Warholm (47.30). The 2022 world champion Alison Dos Santos finished third in 47.62.

McMaster, from the British Virgin Islands, was inspired by the large crowd. &ldquo;There are more people here than on my island,&rdquo; he exclaimed.
Newly-minted world 1500m champion Josh Kerr also had his colours lowered in a race that reversed his role, from hunter to hunted. In Budapest Kerr pounced on tiring leader Jakob Ingebrigtsen, but he took the lead almost two laps out in Zurich and this time it was rising US runner Yared Nuguse who brought the late charge, sneaking under the Scotsman&rsquo;s guard in the last metres to win in 3:30.49.
Kerr was just 0.02 behind him with Kenyan Abel Kipsang in third (3:30.85).
However, Bahrain&rsquo;s Winfred Yavi maintained her supremacy in the 3000m steeplechase, after claiming her first world title last week.
With 250 metres to go, Yavi took the lead from Beatrice Chepkoech but the world record-holder refused to yield, and they sprinted to the finish line side-by-side, Yavi just out-lasting Chepkoech in the last metres to win in 9:03.19, from Chepkoech (9:03.70) and Faith Cherotich (9:07.59), reproducing the Budapest podium.
Victory was never in doubt in the men&rsquo;s 5000m as Yomif Kejelcha took a 60-metre lead into the last lap and maintained it to the line to win in 12:46.91. Olympic 10,000m champion Selemon Barega (12:54.17) outlasted Grant Fisher (12:55.88) to take a distant second place.
Like Kejelcha, Laura Muir was looking to make amends after a disappointing World Championships. Coming down in distance to the 800m from her favoured 1500m, she blasted into the lead on the second lap and claimed a convincing victory (1:57.71) from Catriona Bisset (1:58.77) and Adelle Tracy (1:59.05).
In the field, there was plenty of ambition on show as Mondo Duplantis attempted a world pole vault record of 6.23m at one end of the track and Mutaz Barshim took a look at 2.40m in the high jump at the other.

The spirit was willing, but the body was not, and both had to content themselves with a comfortable victory.
Duplantis, arguably the most dominant performer in athletics, took the win at 6.00m as two-time world champion Sam Kendricks set a season&rsquo;s best of 5.95m for second and KC Lightfoot took third (5.85m) on a countback.
&ldquo;The 6.23m jumps felt surprisingly good,&rdquo; Duplantis said. &ldquo;After the 6m jump, I wanted to wake myself up and make something crazy. My energy was low. Such a height is not easy only four days after the World Championships. Coming down from that high was draining. My legs felt flat. I wanted to get myself back into world record mentality.&rdquo;
He vowed to make more attempts at the world record in his last two Diamond League meetings of the season.
Triple world champion Barshim, whose spectacular record at championships was snapped in Budapest by his fellow Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi, reasserted himself in Zurich with victory at 2.35m. New Zealand&rsquo;s Hamish Kerr (2.33m) and South Korean Sanghyeok Woo (2.31m) took the minor placings, with Tamberi (2.28m) an exhausted fourth after last week&rsquo;s heroics.
By Yulimar Rojas&rsquo; standards, this has not been a vintage year. The triple jump great looked strangely vulnerable for much of the World Championships final in Budapest last week, before claiming her fourth consecutive title at the last gasp, but the pressure was off in Zurich and the Rojas show was back on the road.
An opening-round leap of 15.00m gave her the lead immediately, and the breathing room she did not have in the World Championships final. A second-round leap in the 15.50m range was deemed a foul, but her fourth-round effort of 15.15m stretched her advantage over Jamaica&rsquo;s Shanieka Ricketts (14.78m) and Cuba&rsquo;s Liadagmis Povea (14.73m).

The &lsquo;final three&rsquo; jump-off did not change the order as Rojas produced an identical jump of 15.15m and neither of her closest rivals could improve.
&ldquo;From the minute I arrived here in Zurich, I was certain this was going to be a great competition &ndash; especially coming back from the World Championships where it wasn't all great,&rdquo; Rojas said. &ldquo;The crowd play a very important role here, because they help you to give it your best every time.&rdquo;
It was left to Greece&rsquo;s world champion Miltiadis Tentoglou to provide the late drama in the horizontal jumps as he leapfrogged his rivals with a jump of 8.20m in the &lsquo;final three&rsquo; round. He went into the jump-off in third place with a best of 8.04m, but soared past 2019 world champion Tajay Gayle (8.07m) and Jarrion Lawson (8.05m) to claim the win.
India&rsquo;s world and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra went very close to pulling off the same trick in the &lsquo;final three&rsquo; of the javelin. He went in trailing Czech rival Jakub Vadlejch (85.86m to 85.22m) and produced his best throw of the series but fell just short of the win with 85.71m. Germany&rsquo;s Julian Weber was third with 85.04m.

Eight of the 12 newly minted world champions in action on Thursday were victorious in Zurich

A week after they shared the most heart-warming moment of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23, pole vaulters Nina Kennedy and Katie Moon were back in the heat of battle at the Weltklasse meeting as the Wanda Diamond League resumed in Zurich on Wednesday (30).
But there was no sharing the gold this time as Kennedy found a little extra height in the wake of her first world title win, clearing an Oceanian and Australian indoor record of 4.91m, one centimetre more than the national record she set in Budapest.
The two vaulters staged another thrilling contest, but in a very different location from last week&rsquo;s championships stadium. This time they were competing at the Zurich Hauptbahnhof, the city&rsquo;s cavernous main train station, surrounded by thousands of raucous fans and early evening commuters.
Zurich generally stages a &lsquo;city event&rsquo; as a prelude to the main stadium event the following day and this year it was the women&rsquo;s pole vault that was given the city stage.
The field included the top seven women from the World Championships final, all facing the challenge of backing up just days after their major event of the year.
Finland&rsquo;s world bronze medallist Wilma Murto exited the competition early this time, missing her three attempts at 4.51m. She later admitted that she felt physically and emotionally drained after breaking through to win her first global medal in Budapest.
Slovenia&rsquo;s Tina Sutej, who set a national record of 4.80m to finish in fourth place in Budapest, failed at 4.66m this time.
That left five women in the contest, but home favourite Angelica Moser and rising Briton Molly Caudery could not clear 4.76m, and the field was reduced to three as the bar rose to 4.81m.
World indoor champion Sandi Morris has had a tough year and finished only seventh in Budapest, after three successive silver medals at global level. But the 31-year-old US vaulter found a remnant of her usual form in Zurich to move into the top three with a third-time clearance of 4.76m (her best this season).
She was finally eliminated at 4.86m, which Kennedy cleared at the first attempt to keep the competition lead.
Meanwhile, Moon employed a minimalist strategy, making just two jumps, clearances at 4.66m and 4.81m, before reaching the deciding height of 4.86m, where she had one miss before moving up to try to stay with her Australian rival.
Kennedy had rattled the bar with her first-time clearance at 4.86m and again gave it a good smack at 4.91m, but the bar refused to drop and that sealed her victory, her second in a row in Zurich, home to one of the sport&rsquo;s most historic one-day meetings.
"I am really surprised, and I am so happy,&rdquo; Kennedy said .&ldquo;I love Zurich.&rdquo;
&ldquo;I honestly didn&rsquo;t expect that today. I came here to have fun and it all worked out.&rdquo;
This performance also lifted her to No.6 on the world indoor all-time list.
Kennedy will now return home to Perth in Australia as a world champion for the first time, before travelling to Eugene for the Diamond League final on 16-17 September, where she is the defending champion.
Moon and Morris will be waiting for her, with home advantage, after taking the top two medals at last year&rsquo;s World Championships at Hayward Field.
Morris said she &ldquo;really needed this&rdquo; performance to regain some confidence for the rest of the season.
&ldquo;I dealt with some of my own demons after having a really rough season. With the Diamond League final coming up, I am trying to go out with a bang.&rdquo;

Kennedy goes solo to win pole vault in Zurich as Diamond League resumes

The World Athletics Championships may be over, but the Wanda Diamond League is back in full swing and heads to Xiamen on Saturday (2) for the newest stop on the premier one-day meeting circuit.
Twenty medallists &ndash; including eight champions &ndash; from the recent World Championships will be in action in the Chinese city, with the men&rsquo;s 110m hurdles and 800m boasting the full set of podium finishers from the Hungarian capital.
Grant Holloway will be racing for the first time since becoming a three-time world 110m hurdles champion. After winning the 2022 world title, he was beaten in two of his six post-championships races, so he&rsquo;ll be keen not to let that happen again. But with Olympic champion and world silver medallist Hansle Parchment and world bronze medallist Daniel Roberts in the line-up, Holloway won&rsquo;t have an easy time.
World finalists Freddie Crittenden and Wilhem Belocian are also in the field, as is sub-13-second performer Cordell Tinch.
The men&rsquo;s two-lap event is similarly loaded.
World 800m champion Marco Arop of Canada will line up against the two men he shared a podium with last week: Kenya&rsquo;s Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Britain&rsquo;s Ben Pattison.

It was such an open race in Budapest, had it been run eight times, there probably would have been a different winner each time. Saturday&rsquo;s race will be a chance to put that theory to the test.
World leader Wycliffe Kinyamal and savvy French racer Benjamin Robert will be sure to make the race more interesting.
<h2>Outstanding in their field</h2>
All four of the field events in Xiamen will feature the world champions.
USA&rsquo;s Laulaga Tausaga, the surprise discus gold medallist in Budapest, will take on the woman she succeeded as world champion, China&rsquo;s Feng Bin, who is sure to get great support from the home crowd. Multiple global champion Sandra Perkovic finished outside of the medals in Budapest so will be out for redemption here.
World long jump champion Ivana Vuleta takes on fellow world finalists Ese Brume and Martha Koala, as well as two women who narrowly missed out on making the final in Budapest: USA&rsquo;s Quanesha Burks and Australia&rsquo;s Brooke Buschkuehl.
In Budapest, Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh finally won the outdoor global title that had so far eluded her. After her gold medal was secured, she went on to attempt 2.07m. The competition in Xiamen may be another opportunity to see how high she can go, and she&rsquo;ll no doubt be pushed by 2022 world champion Eleanor Patterson.

Burkina Faso&rsquo;s Hugues Fabrice Zango will compete for the first time since winning the world triple jump title. Andy Diaz, who was unable to compete in Budapest while he awaits his transfer of allegiance from Cuba to Italy, will be able to test his form against the newly minted world champion.
Soufiane El Bakkali won his third successive global steeplechase title in Budapest, the Moroccan looking every bit as superior as he has done for the past few years. Kenya&rsquo;s world bronze medallist Abraham Kibiwott and Japanese record-holder Ryuji Miura look to be El Bakkali&rsquo;s toughest opponents in Xiamen.
Marileidy Paulino, yet another gold medallist from Budapest, will contest the women&rsquo;s 400m in Xiamen, taking on world bronze medallist Sada Williams of Barbados and world finalists Candice McLeod and Talitha Diggs.
<h2>Kerly-Jacobs clash</h2>
Most of the early season 100m clashes between 2022 world champion Fred Kerley and Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs failed to materialise as both men dealt with niggling injuries.
As fate would have it, neither man made the 100m final in Budapest. But in many ways, that would only serve to fire up the two global gold medallists, and they&rsquo;ll have a chance of redemption in Xiamen. Not that victory is guaranteed for either of them.
They&rsquo;ll take on 2022 world silver medallist Marvin Bracy-Williams, 2019 world champion Christian Coleman, and rising Jamaican trio Rohan Watson, Kishane Thompson and Ackeem Blake.
The 400m silver and bronze medallists from Budapest &ndash; Britain&rsquo;s Matthew Hudson-Smith and USA&rsquo;s Quincy Hall &ndash; will clash again over one lap of the track. Jamaica&rsquo;s Rusheen McDonald, who has clocked 44.03 this year but missed out on an individual spot in Budapest, will be keen to test his form against that duo, as will 2012 Olympic champion Kirani James.
The three Jamaican women who reached the 400m hurdles final in Budapest &ndash; bronze medallist Rushell Clayton, two-time Commonwealth champion Janieve Russell, and Andrenette Knight &ndash; will race each other again in Xiamen.

World cross-country champion Beatrice Chebet leads a talented 3000m field that also includes Ethiopia&rsquo;s triple world U20 medallist Melknat Wudu and Kenyan duo Margaret Akidor and Caroline Nyaga.
Elsewhere, Kenya&rsquo;s Nelly Chepchirchir &ndash; who set a PB of 3:57.90 to finish fifth in the 1500m final in Budapest &ndash; takes on three other women who&rsquo;ve broken 3:58 for the metric mile this year: Australia&rsquo;s Lindsen Hall, and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Freweyni Hailu and Worknesh Mesele.

Fourteen newly-minted world champions are scheduled to compete at the Weltklasse meeting in Zurich as the Wanda Diamond League resumes this week, just days after the World Athletics Championships concluded in Budapest.
Several of those events will feature the full podium from Budapest, including the women&rsquo;s 100m hurdles, both men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s pole vault and the women&rsquo;s triple jump.
The female pole vaulters will be the first to take the stage, competing in the traditional city event in the Zurich train station on Wednesday evening (30). Nina Kennedy and Katie Moon, who completed a historic competition in Budapest when they agreed to share the gold medal after jumping for more than two hours, will return along with bronze medallist Wilma Murto of Finland, and leading vaulters Sandi Morris and Tina Sutej to put on another show for the citizens of Zurich.
On Thursday, in front of a sold-out Letzigrund Stadium, Noah Lyles will return to his favoured distance, the 200m. Last week Lyles became the first man since Usain Bolt in 2015 to claim the world sprint double, and he will take on five of the six men who followed him home in the longer sprint in Budapest, including silver medallist Erriyon Knighton and fourth-placed Zharnel Hughes.
Lyles is still basking in the glory of his triple gold medal success in Budapest but said he was looking forward to a chance to run fast against a top-class field in Zurich.
"When I got off the plane yesterday and I did a shakeout, I thought: 'I feel better than I did getting ready for the 200m final.' I was feeling that 'pop', which I didn&rsquo;t have there," he said.
Fellow US sprint star Sha&rsquo;Carri Richardson will begin a triumphant tour of Europe after claiming the mantle of world&rsquo;s fastest woman in Budapest. She will face Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, who has struggled to find that form so far this year.
The women&rsquo;s 200m will be similarly intriguing as Jamaica&rsquo;s two-time world champion Shericka Jackson (21.41 in Budapest) edges ever closer to the 35-year-old world record of 21.34, set by Florence Griffith-Joyner at the 1988 Olympic Games. Silver medallist Gabby Thomas will also be on hand to challenge Jackson.
Jackson revealed in the pre-event press conference that she was "a bit under the weather" after her heavy programme in Budapest, where she combined the 100m and 200m with sprint relay duty.&nbsp;
"I don&rsquo;t think tomorrow will be super-fast but I want to have some fun and see how it goes," she said.
She will focus on the 200m for the rest of the season and hopes to register an even faster time before she finishes her year.
"I wrote 21.40 on my bib (before the final in Budapest). Unfortunately, I didn&rsquo;t get it that day, but I have two more 200s this season," she added.
Another dual world champion, Danielle Williams, leads a full-strength field in the 100m hurdles, with silver medallist and Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, bronze medallist Kendra Harrsion,&nbsp; 2019 world champion Nia Ali, fourth-placed Devynne Charlton and home hope Ditaji Kambundji all on the starting line.
Williams also revealed that she has unfulfilled goals for the season, having reclaimed the world 100m hurdles title after eight years.
"I still have one more goal to achieve this season, so that&rsquo;s what&rsquo;s driving me," she said. "Before the season I wrote down three things: I want to make the national team, I want to win the world title and I want to run 12.2 seconds, and I still have three more chances to do that."
Norway&rsquo;s Karsten Warholm went one better, winning his third world 400m hurdles title in Budapest, and will take on Brazil&rsquo;s 2022 world champion Alison Dos Santos of Brazil in the quarter-sticks.

For true dominance, Venezuela&rsquo;s Yulimar Rojas stands supreme as a four-time world champion, although it required all her might to defeat Ukraine&rsquo;s Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk to win that fourth title. They will go head-to-head again in Zurich, with Cuba&rsquo;s Leyanis Perez Hernandez completing the podium performers in the field.
The horizontal jumps continue with the men&rsquo;s long jump where world champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece takes on 2019 world champion and Budapest bronze medallist Tajay Gayle, rising star Mattia Furlani and Switzerland&rsquo;s own Simon Ehammer.
In the pole vault, the four medallists return to the runway. World champion Mondo Duplantis will once again meet silver medallist Ernest Obiena, the first athlete from the Philippines to win a World Championships medal, and shared bronze medallists Chris Nilsen and Kurtis Marschall.
Duplantis said he expected high-quality performances in Zurich, despite it following hard on the heels of the World Championships.
"It&rsquo;s tough coming off a World Championships &ndash; we have never had Zurich right after World Championships before &ndash; but it could be a very good thing," he said. "This is the most intense meet of the year that&rsquo;s not a championship meet, so once we step on the track and feel that crowd, we have to lock in. The people who didn&rsquo;t win in Budapest still have a lot of hunger, so I like that it&rsquo;s here. This is not a joke, this is probably the most historic competition ever, so we need to wake up."

Italy&rsquo;s world high jump champion Gianmarco Tamberi found his best form of the year at exactly the right time in Budapest and will take that momentum into Zurich, where he will face his old friend, rival and fellow Olympic champion Mutaz Barshim.
Another who has the knack of finding his best form when it matters most, India&rsquo;s world and Olympic javelin champion Neeraj Chopra, will also return fresh from his triumph in Budapest, and will face bronze medallist Jakub Vadlejch and fourth-place finisher Julian Weber.
Chopra said that having won both the Olympic and world titles, reaching the 90-metre mark was his last big goal.
And he&rsquo;ll be receiving some unexpected support in Zurich. The sport&rsquo;s ultimate showman, Tamberi, has offered to use his crowd-whispering skills to channel their energy to Chopra and help him to get out a big throw.
"Here everything is possible because we are in Zurich and the crowd is amazing," Tamberi said.
Many of the world&rsquo;s best middle-distance runners have opted for rest and recovery this week after a hot and gruelling World Championships campaign, but world 1500m champion Josh Kerr wants more after his upset win over Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Kerr will need to be on his game again with eight sub-3:30 runners in the field. They include world 5000m silver medallist Mohamed Katir, US champion Yared Nuguse and Kenya&rsquo;s Abel Kipsang.
Bahrain&rsquo;s world steeplechase champion Winfred Yavi has also chosen to back up from her triumph and will meet the other medallists, world record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech and Faith Cherotich, and a field packed with quality.
Four world finalists, led by fourth-placed Raevyn Rogers, will compete in the women&rsquo;s 800m, along with European 1500m champion Laura Muir, stepping down in distance.
Olympic 10,000m champion Selemon Barega, the 5000m bronze medallist in Budapest, will also step down to the 5000m, racing alongside world steeplechase record-holder Lamecha Girma, Yomif Kejelcha and Swiss-based contender Dominic Lobalu.

Newly crowned world champions out in force in Zurich

Femke Bol produced the most dominant display at the London Athletics Meet on Sunday (23) &ndash; the final Wanda Diamond League fixture before the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 &ndash; winning the 400m hurdles in 51.45, the third-fastest time in history.
The Dutch athlete smashed her own Diamond League record and continental record, showing the kind of form that could land the European champion with her first global title next month.
It set the tone for the rest of the afternoon on a day when several athletes broke meeting records, including Noah Lyles in the 200m and Marie-Josee Ta Lou in the 100m.
Bol led from the first barrier and continued to open up distance on the rest of the field with every stride. At the half-way point she had a lead of half a second over US champion Shamier Little; that margin grew to a full second by the time Bol entered the home straight.
If she felt fatigue on the home straight, she did a good job of hiding it as she charged down the final 100 metres to cross the line in 51.45 &ndash; a time which, just 13 months ago, would have been a world record. Only world and Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has ever gone quicker, first with her 51.41 world record at the 2022 US Championships and then with her 50.68 world record at the World Championships one month later.

Commonwealth champion Janieve Russell ran one of her fastest times of the year, 53.75, but still finished more than two seconds adrift of Bol. Little was third in 53.97.
&ldquo;This is amazing, I cannot believe it yet,&rdquo; said Bol. &ldquo;I felt really good at some points in the race, but I tried not to think about the goal. I've been wanting to run a 51 ever since Tokyo; I had a feeling I could do it but I still can't believe I've done it.
&ldquo;I hope we can put up a great race at the World Championships,&rdquo; added Bol, the world silver medallist. &ldquo;There's always room to improve but for now I'm going to enjoy this.&rdquo;
Lyles extended his winning streak in the 200m, but he only just managed to hold on for victory in what proved to be one of the most exciting races of the afternoon.
The two-time world 200m champion was level with Botsana&rsquo;s Letsile Tebogo and Britain&rsquo;s Zharnel Hughes entering the home straight. Hughes&rsquo; challenge started to fade with about 50 metres remaining while Lyles pulled ahead. Tebogo, meanwhile, started to close on Lyles towards the end, but the US sprinter held on for victory in a world-leading 19.47, taking 0.29 off Usain Bolt&rsquo;s meeting record from 2008.

Tebogo, the world U20 record-holder at 100m, finished second in an African record of 19.50, while Hughes placed third in a British record of 19.73.
Another sprints meeting record fell just moments later as Marie-Josee Ta Lou powered to victory in the women&rsquo;s 100m in 10.75, breaking Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce&rsquo;s meeting record from 2013 and equalling the UK all-comers&rsquo; record set by the Jamaican when winning the 2012 Olympic title.
Britain&rsquo;s Dina Asher-Smith got off the best and had a slight advantage at half way. Ta Lou came through towards the end to take the win, while Asher-Smith held on for second place in a season&rsquo;s best of 10.85. World 200m champion Shericka Jackson &ndash; who had won over her specialist distance in Monaco just two days prior &ndash; was third in 10.94.
<h2>Tsegay, Chepkoech and Crouser break UK all-comers&rsquo; records</h2>
In one of the most highly anticipated races of the afternoon, world champion Gudaf Tsegay produced a well-timed finish to beat Olympic champion Sifan Hassan and Diamond League champion Beatrice Chebet in the highest-quality women&rsquo;s 5000m ever.
Pacemaker Margaret Akidor led the field through 3000m in a swift 8:35.18, but which point a lead pack of seven women &ndash; Tsegay, Hassan, Chebet, Medina Eisa, Alicia Monson, Birke Haylom and Melknat Wudu &ndash; had formed.
Haylom and Wudu soon drifted back to form a chase duo, while Hassan took up the leading duties, maintaining the pace that had been set. With one lap to go, the five women were still close together as they all started to kick for home. Hassan continued to lead into the home straight, but then Tsegay and Chebet went past her.
Tsegay went on to win in a UK all-comers&rsquo; record of 14:12.29, just seven seconds shy of the world record and moving to fourth on the world all-time list. Chebet was second in a PB of 14:12.92 and Hassan third in a European record of 14:13.42.
A few strides behind, Eisa was fourth in a world U20 record of 14:16.54 and Monson followed a few seconds later in a North American record of 14:19.45.
&ldquo;At a championships, it&rsquo;s all about positions, but today was all about times,&rdquo; said Tsegay. &ldquo;My coach wanted to look at my 5000m speed. We&rsquo;ll decide about which event to do (5000m or 10,000m) at the World Champs nearer the time.&rdquo;
Ryan Crouser smashed the UK all-comers&rsquo; record in the shot put with 23.07m, returning to 23-metre territory for the first time since his world record of 23.56m in May.

He led throughout, opening with 22.07m and then improving to 22.63m in round two, his first of three meeting records. Tom Walsh, who won the world title in this stadium in 2017, then applied some pressure with a 22.58m heave &ndash; his best throw since the 2019 world Championships.
After throws of 22.60m and 22.65m, Crouser sent his shot out to 23.07m in round five before rounding out his series with 22.66m. Walsh didn&rsquo;t improve on his earlier mark, but ended his series with a 22.31m effort. Two-time world champion Joe Kovacs was third with 21.87m.
The UK all-comers&rsquo; record was also broken in the women&rsquo;s 3000m steeplechase with Jackline Chepkoech running away from world record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech in the second half to win in 8:57.35.
The field went through 1000m in 2:55, then Beatrice Chepkoech led at 2000m, which was reached in 6:01.07. But the younger Chepkoech (no relation) soon set off and opened up a gap on her more experienced compatriot.
Beatrice Chepkoech finished second in 9:04.34 and Britain&rsquo;s Aimee Pratt was third in 9:16.10, season&rsquo;s bests for both.
The seventh and final meeting record of the day came in the women&rsquo;s 800m, the last event on the programme.
World and Olympic silver medallist Keely Hodgkinson was a late withdrawal, but fellow Briton Jemma Reekie secured a popular victory for the home crowd, &nbsp;winning in a season&rsquo;s best of 1:57.30 &ndash; her second-fastest time ever &ndash; to smash to meeting record by almost a second.

Jamaica&rsquo;s Natoya Goule-Toppin was second in 1:57.61 and 2019 world champion Halimah Nakaayi was third in a Ugandan record of 1:57.62. In fourth, Catriona Bisset broke her own Oceanian record with 1:57.78.
<h2>Holloway, Van Niekerk and Nuguse win in close finishes</h2>
Two-time world champion Grant Holloway maintained his consistency in the 110m hurdles, winning in 13.01 (1.3m/s), but the world indoor record-holder was challenged by Japan&rsquo;s Shunsuke Izumiya, who finished second in 13.06, just 0.02 shy of his national record.
Wayde van Niekerk, returning to this track for the first time since the 2017 World Championships when he won his second world title, was once again victorious over one lap of the track. But the South African had to work hard for his 44.36 triumph as US duo Bryce Deamon (44.40) and Vernon Norwood (44.46) put up a strong challenge down the home straight.
The men&rsquo;s high jump was also nail-bitingly close between Mutaz Barshim and JuVaughn Harrison.
Barshim had a clean card up to and including 2.30m, a height that Harrison needed two attempts to clear. Barshim continued to lead at 2.33m, with both men going clear. But Harrison was the only one to successfully get over 2.35m, giving him a welcome confidence boost ahead of the World Championships.

US champion Yared Nuguse won a highly competitive 1500m in a stadium record of 3:30.44. Australia&rsquo;s Stewart McSweyn built up a comfortable lead at half way, but was caught by Norway&rsquo;s Narve Gilje Nordas on the final lap. Nordas continued to lead into the home straight, but Nuguse caught him in the closing stages and crossed the line first in 3:30.44.
Nordas was second in 3:30.58, just holding off Britain&rsquo;s Neil Gourley (3:30.62) and Elliot Giles (3:30.92). For the first time ever, 12 men finished inside 3:32 in the same race.
European champion Wilma Murto produced a season&rsquo;s best of 4.80m to win the women&rsquo;s pole vault, beating world and Olympic champion Katie Moon on countback. Tina Sutej and Nina Kennedy were third and fourth respectively, both clearing 4.71m.
The women&rsquo;s long jump looked set to be a close and competitive contest on paper, but it ended with a decisive victory for USA&rsquo;s Quanesha Burks.
She sailed out to a PB of 6.98m in the opening round, which remained the best mark of the day by quite some distance. She backed it up with 6.78m in round four, which would have also been enough to win from Australia&rsquo;s Brooke Buschkuehl, who was second with 6.72m. US champion Tara Davis-Woodhall was third, also with 6.72m.
Olympic champion Daniel Stahl notched up another discus victory over arch rival Kristjan Ceh, the world champion. Ceh took the lead in round two with 65.93m, improving to 66.02m in round three. But in round four, Stahl took the lead with 67.03m, then Australia&rsquo;s Matthew Denny moved ahead of Ceh with a season&rsquo;s best of 66.77m.
