Saint Lucia&rsquo;s double world finalist Julien Alfred got her season off to a strong start by running 22.28 to win the 200m at the Dr. Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque on Saturday (20).
The 22-year-old, who sits second on the world short track all-time list with the 22.01 she ran to win last year&rsquo;s NCAA title, held off her training partner Rhasidat Adeleke who clocked 22.49. That was a second Irish record of the day for Adeleke, who had earlier improved her own 60m mark to 7.15 when winning the invitational race. She now sits second on the season top list behind Aleia Hobbs with 7.11.
Alfred, who is also the second-fastest woman of all-time over 60m, will race that shorter sprint at the Millrose Games &ndash; a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting &ndash; in New York, where her competition will include Britain&rsquo;s 2019 world 200m champion Dina Asher-Smith.
Asher-Smith was also in action in Albuquerque on Saturday and she won the 300m in a national best of 36.77.
Her compatriot Yusuf Bizimana, the NCAA champion, won the men&rsquo;s 800m in 1:46.47, while Kenya&rsquo;s Amon Kemboi won the mile in 3:58.30.
Over at the Hokie Invitational in Virginia on Friday, Tinoda Matsatsa improved Bizimana&rsquo;s week-old US collegiate 1000m record by 0.05, clocking 2:18.05.
Also on Friday at the Corky Classic in Lubbock, Temitope Adeshina cleared a Nigerian record of 1.96m to win the high jump.
In Saturday's competition in&nbsp;Lubbock, world indoor 60m hurdles silver medallist Devynne Charlton followed up her 7.88 performance from last weekend with a&nbsp;PB of 7.75 to win the invitational race, improving her previous Bahamian record by 0.06.
<h2>M&uuml;ller leaps 6.81m in Dortmund</h2>
Germany&rsquo;s Laura Raquel M&uuml;ller was among the winners at the Sparkassen Indoor Meeting, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Bronze meeting, in Dortmund on Saturday (20).
The 19-year-old added 30cm to her PB by leaping 6.81m to win ahead of her compatriots Mikaelle Assani (6.72m) and Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo (6.65m). Splitting them to finish in third place was Servia&rsquo;s Milica Gardasevic with a leap of 6.69m.
Kuwait&rsquo;s Yaqoub Al-Youha set a meeting record of 7.58 to win the 60m hurdles ahead of Job Geerds of the Netherlands in a 7.63 PB.
Britain&rsquo;s Georgia Bell also got a meeting record in winning the 1500m in 4:03.54, while Magdalena Stefanowicz of Poland won a close 60m, clocking a PB of 7.22 to pip Alexandra Burghardt of Germany, who recorded the same time.

Ethiopia&rsquo;s Lamecha Girma will return to the scene of his world indoor 3000m record when he competes at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in Lievin, France, on 10 February.
The multiple world and Olympic 3000m steeplechase medallist clocked 7:23.81 at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold&nbsp;meeting last year to break the previous world record of 7:24.90 set by Daniel Komen in 1998. He went on to improve the world 3000m steeplechase record in Paris in June, running 7:52.11.
Now Girma gets ready to race at the Arena Stade Couvert once again, six days after he competes at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, where he will also run the 3000m.
Girma is the second athlete named for this year&rsquo;s Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais, following the announcement of USA&rsquo;s Olympic and world pole vault champion Katie Moon.
This year&rsquo;s World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold season kicks off in Astana on 27 January and the fields for the men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s 60m hurdles there have recently been announced.
Britain&rsquo;s 2018 world indoor champion Andrew Pozzi is among the entries for the men&rsquo;s event, and he will be joined by athletes including Cuba&rsquo;s&nbsp;Roger Iribarne, Milan Trajkovic of Cyprus and Yaqoub Al-Youha of Kuwait.
In the women&rsquo;s event, USA&rsquo;s two-time world indoor champion and 2019 world 100m hurdles gold medallist Nia Ali features in a field including 2022 world 100m hurdles champion Tobi Amusan, USA&rsquo;s Tia Jones and Alaysha Johnson, and Ireland&rsquo;s Sarah Lavin.

World record-breaker Girma returns to Lievin

Belgium&rsquo;s Isaac Kimeli will look to go one better than his runner-up finish last year while Kenya&rsquo;s Edinah Jebitok will target another World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold meeting triumph at the CrossCup in Hannut on Sunday (21).
Kimeli finished second behind Yann Schrub of France when they raced in the snow-covered Belgian city in 2023. Kimeli&rsquo;s compatriot Guillaume Grimard was third on that occasion and the pair clash again over 9km in Hannut, but this time they will go up against a field including Uganda&rsquo;s Rogers Kibet, Rwanda&rsquo;s Yves Nimubona and Burundi&rsquo;s Egide Ntakarutimana.
Nimubona and Ntakarutimana opened their 2024 cross country campaigns at the Campaccio in San Giorgio su Legnano, Italy, on 6 January, respectively finishing third and fourth. Nimubona then raced over 10km on the roads in Valencia a week later, clocking a PB of 27:49.
Kibet was also in PB form in Valencia, finishing six spots ahead of Nimubona in eighth place, clocking 27:07. The 20-year-old finished 15th at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst last February.
Grimard is back in action after finishing sixth in San Giorgio su Legnano behind&nbsp;Nimubona and Ntakarutimana, while Kimeli will also be seeking a strong performance on home soil when he makes his season debut. After finishing second in Hannut last year, he went on to finish 13th in the 10,000m at the World Championships in Budapest and then 11th at the European Cross Country Championships in Brussels towards the end of the year.
In the women&rsquo;s 9km race, Jebitok has the chance to add another Cross Country Tour Gold meeting win to her CV this season, after her victories in Seville in November and Venta de Banos in December.
The 22-year-old, who placed eighth in Bathurst last year, then raced at the Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza in Elgoibar on 7 January and finished second there, just two seconds behind her Kenyan compatriot Beatrice Chebet, the world cross country champion.
Pamela Kosgei was also a medallist in Bathurst, having claimed bronze in the U20 women&rsquo;s race, and the 19-year-old is entered alongside her compatriot Jebitok for the race in Hannut.
They will be joined on the start line by Britain&rsquo;s Megan Keith, who finished third in Hannut last year and went on to win European U23 titles in the 5000m in July and cross country in December.
Like Kibet and Nimubona, 21-year-old Keith raced on the roads in Valencia and ran a PB of 31:22.
The field in Hannut also features Italy&rsquo;s Giovanna Selva and Hungary&rsquo;s Lili Anna Vindics-Toth, who placed third and fourth respectively at the Campaccio, plus Kenya&rsquo;s Faith Chepkoech and Belgium&rsquo;s Jana Van Lent.

A Scottish Olympic gold medallist and two world indoor champions will help to officially open the MOWA Indoor Athletics Exhibition Glasgow 24 in the St Enoch Centre shopping mall on the evening of Friday 2 February.
The latest Museum of World Athletics (MOWA) heritage exhibition marks the staging of the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24 (1-3 March 2024) and celebrates more than 170 years of indoor track &amp; field athletics history.
Along with distinguished guests at the opening ceremony from the City of Glasgow, British Athletics, the Local Organising Committee, Scottish Athletics and Team Scotland will be 1980 Olympic 100m champion Allan Wells as well as 1993 world indoor champions Yvonne Murray-Mooney (3000m) and Tom McKean (800m).
Joining this distinguished trio will be a Scottish star of a more recent vintage, WIC Glasgow 24 ambassador Eilidh Doyle, herself a world and Olympic medallist and European champion.
The month-long MOWA exhibition features World Athletics Heritage&rsquo;s collection of indoor athletics competition artefacts dating from the 1880s. The displays contain clothing, shoes, equipment, trophies and medals donated by more than 30 world champions and/or record-breakers.
The exhibits are supported by giant wall graphics, text, photographs and videos which take the visitor on a journey from the world&rsquo;s first &lsquo;indoor&rsquo; meeting in 1849 to the present day.
Appropriately, given the exhibition&rsquo;s location, the displays have a distinctly Scottish feel. As well as competition items that the opening ceremony guests will be providing on the night, running spikes from Scottish world champions Liz McColgan (Tokyo 1991) and Jake Wightman (Oregon 2022) will be exhibited.
Life-sized photographs of Scotland&rsquo;s two Olympic 400m champions Wyndham Halswelle (London 1908) and Eric Liddell (Paris 1924) will adorn the windows and walls of the exhibition. Greeting visitors at the entrance will be a large photograph of Laura Muir winning the first half of a 3000m and 1500m double at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 2019.
As usual, stunning video material is incorporated into the displays including highlights of past editions of the World Athletics Indoor Championships and a cinematic edit of the Birmingham 2018 edition. For the first time in a MOWA exhibition, there will also be an experimental touch screen via which visitors can select videos from a small initial library of clips.
Usual MOWA favourites such as giant pole vault and high jump graphics set at their current world indoor record heights, and a colourful display of national athletics singlets, will also feature in the Glasgow exhibit.
During the final fortnight of the exhibition, there will be a free prize draw for visitors to enter. The prize will be unworn autographed clothing donated by Britain&rsquo;s marathon world record-breaker Paula Radcliffe and combined events Olympic and world champion Jessica Ennis-Hill, who won the world indoor pentathlon title in 2010.
The MOWA Indoor Athletics Exhibition Glasgow 24, on the ground floor of the St Enoch Centre, 55 St Enoch Square, Glasgow G1 4BW, will be open daily to the public from 11am to 6pm from Saturday 3 February, closing on the final day of the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24 (1-3 March 2024).

Scottish greats Murray, McKean and Wells to open MOWA exhibition in Glasgow

World Athletics is deeply saddened to hear that Canadian pole vaulter Shawn Barber died on Wednesday (17) at the age of 29.
A prodigious athlete, Barber won the 2015 world title at the age of 21. Five months later, he increased his own national record of 6.00m, which at the time made him the youngest man ever to clear the six-metre barrier.
Born in New Mexico, USA, Barber was exposed to the sport from an early age as his father was an international pole vaulter and represented Canada at the 1983 World Championships.
One week after his 18th birthday, Barber set a national U20 record of 5.32m. He increased that to 5.55m to take bronze at the 2012 World U20 Championships.
He began studying at Akron University in Ohio later that year and continued improving during his time in the US collegiate system. While still an U20 athlete in 2013, he set a senior Canadian record of 5.71m and competed at the World Championships in Moscow.
He won the NCAA indoor title in 2014 with a national indoor record of 5.75m and capped his outdoor season with Commonwealth bronze.
Barber came of age in 2015. He started the year with an undefeated indoor campaign, taking the NCAA indoor title and setting a national indoor record of 5.91m. During the summer season, he won the NCAA outdoor title and the Pan-American Games title, the latter on home soil in Toronto.
But his season peaked at the World Championships in Beijing, where he struck gold with a winning vault of 5.90m, earning Canada&rsquo;s first World Championships medal in the pole vault. At the end of a busy 2015 season, Barber had notched up 25 victories from 32 competitions.
He continued to make history in 2016, setting an outright Canadian record of 6.00m to become the youngest six-metre vaulter in history up until that point. He placed fourth at the World Indoor Championships that year and went on to reach the Olympic final.
Despite difficulties on and off the pole vault runway, he managed to reach two more global finals, and took silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, ending that year with a season&rsquo;s best of 5.92m. His last competition was during the 2020 indoor season.
Fellow pole vaulters and former teammates posted tributes online in the wake of the news.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m completely devastated to hear of the passing of my former teammate and all-round trailblazer for Canadian track and field,&rdquo; said high jumper Derek Drouin, who also won gold for Canada at the 2015 World Championships.
&ldquo;RIP, my friend,&rdquo; said former world record-holder Renaud Lavillenie. &ldquo;The pole vault family has lost an amazing person. We will never forget you.&rdquo;
Doyle Management, who guided Barber&rsquo;s on-track career, posted a statement that said: &ldquo;A friend that will never be forgotten. He will be greatly missed.&rdquo;

Julien Alfred, the second-fastest woman of all-time over 60m, will take on four Olympic medallists in the short sprint at the Millrose Games &ndash; a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting &ndash; in New York on 11 February.
The sprinter from St Lucia won the NCAA indoor title last year in a North American record of 6.94, just 0.02 shy of the long-standing world record. She also won the NCAA indoor 200m title in 22.01, which also moved her to second on the world indoor all-time list.
Outdoors, she went undefeated at 100m from April to August. Her first and only loss of the year came in the World Championships final, where she placed fifth. She went one better in the 200m, finishing fourth.
Alfred will take on a strong field that includes 2019 world 200m champion Dina Asher-Smith. The 28-year-old holds British records for 60m, 100m and 200m, and owns eight global medals as well as seven continental medals, four of them gold.
&ldquo;The Millrose Games is one of the most prestigious and historic indoor competitions in the USA, and I am looking forward to racing there for the first time,&rdquo; said Asher-Smith, who recently relocated to the US. &ldquo;I am really enjoying my new training set up in Austin, and I&rsquo;m looking forward to a big year in 2024.&rdquo;
USA&rsquo;s 2016 Olympic 4x100m champion English Gardner, winner of the 60m at the Millrose Games in 2019, will also be in the line-up, so too will Jamaica&rsquo;s Briana Williams, who won Olympic 4x100m gold in 2021.

Alfred and Asher-Smith lead 60m field for Millrose Games

When 26,318 runners finished the Xiamen Marathon on Sunday, 7 January, those 20,540 men and 5,778 women helped once again underscore this event&rsquo;s standing as the premiere marathon in China.
This Platinum Label race&rsquo;s 21st edition also highlighted organisers&rsquo; ambitions in other spheres, both on and off the scenic seaside course of this sprawling port city along the Taiwan Strait in southeast China.
On Thursday, organisers kicked off the fifth China Marathon Expo &amp; Fujian Road Running Industry Expo, the largest and most important industry expo in the world&rsquo;s second most populous county. About 40,000 visitors were expected. And on Friday, 5 January, nearly 350 people attended the inaugural 'Road Races Sustainability Forum', the first ever all-day event dedicated to sustainability organised by a World Athletics Label Race.
The forum featured a full slate of keynote presentations by local authorities, national and regional athletics federations, stakeholders from the private sector as well as World Athletics representatives. Alessio Punzi, Head of Running, delivered the opening remarks while Head of Sustainability Bob Ramsak used the forum as an opportunity to further acquaint race organisers and athletics officials with the World Athletics Sustainability Strategy, particularly with how it addresses Label Road Races and other mass events.
The audience included race organisers, directors and staff from more than 60 running events in China and elsewhere in the region, dozens of representatives from the Chinese Athletics Association and many of its regional and state associations, along with municipal and local authorities. Researchers, scholars and students from the Institute for Olympic Governance and Beijing Sport University also participated in and attended the event, resulting in wide-ranging exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas.
Hua Yun, the General Manager of the marathon's organising committee, outlined the race&rsquo;s sustainability journey which has placed it firmly as the leading Chinese example of sustainable delivery among road races.

Xiamen first began embedding principles of sustainability into its event in 2008 when it became a smoke-free event and later added a slew of eco-friendly initiatives to reduce and eliminate waste, foster ecological protection, and promote active travel. The event&rsquo;s initiatives have been noted and recognised by the United Nations Environment Programme and in 2019 the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) named it as their Green Award Winner.
Hua also outlined the event&rsquo;s goals and targets over the next four years which include developing a sustainability management system that can be replicated by other events in China and stressed the importance of building strong collaborations with local and regional authorities. Hua said that they hope to make the sustainability forum an annual fixture at the event and to make it a truly global gathering by 2026. The Xiamen Marathon will be the first Platinum Label Race to be evaluated by the Athletics for a Better World Standard, the certification that evaluates, measures and scores an event&rsquo;s achievement in sustainable delivery and in delivering the event in alignment with the World Athletics sustainability strategy, which has been implemented from 1 January of this year.
World Athletics presented a plaque to Ruan Dunliang, director of Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Sports, in recognition of the strong collaboration that has been built between local authorities and Xiamen Marathon organisers to develop, foster and promote sustainability initiatives.
On Saturday, the World Athletics Health &amp; Science team, led by Director Stephane Bermon and Frederic Garrandes, Health and Science Project Manager, conducted their second of two Race Emergency Medicine Courses in China. Thirty-four race medical directors were certified, which combined with the 28 certified at a previous course in Shanghai, means that 91% of China's Race Medical Directors are now certified by the World Academy For Endurance Medicine, by far the leading member federation in the world.

Xiamen hosts first ever day-long sport and sustainability forum in China

World and Olympic pole vault Katie Moon will return to the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Troph&eacute;e EDF in Lievin on 10 February in search of her third victory at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting.
The US vaulter won in Lievin back in 2019, then returned in 2022 to set an indoor season&rsquo;s best of 4.80m to finish third. She won last year in 4.83m, also a season&rsquo;s best, and this year she may have the meeting record of 4.89m in her sights.
She has won the past three global titles outdoors, taking Olympic gold in 2021, followed by world gold in 2022 and in 2023, the latter in a tie with Australia&rsquo;s Nina Kennedy.
Moon has a best of 4.95m outdoors and 4.94m indoors. She opened her 2024 campaign last weekend in Reno, vaulting 4.53m off a 12-step approach.

Evans Chebet and Gabriel Geay, the top two finishers at last year&rsquo;s BAA Boston Marathon, will return to the World Athletics Platinum Label road race on 15 April to take on recent Valencia Marathon winner Sisay Lemma.
Chebet successfully defended his Boston title last year in 2:05:54. In fact, the Kenyan has won six of his past seven marathons.
Lemma won in Valencia last month in 2:01:48, making him the fourth-fastest man in history. The Ethiopian, who also won the 2021 London Marathon, is the fastest man in this year&rsquo;s Boston Marathon field, which features 20 men with sub-2:10 PBs.
Tanzania&rsquo;s Geay, runner-up in Boston last year, has an identical PB to Chebet &ndash; 2:03:00 &ndash; and, like Chebet, it was also set in Valencia.
Other men in the field with sub-2:05 PBs are Kenya&rsquo;s Joshua Belet (2:04:18), Ronald Korir (2:04:22), and Cyprian Kotut (2:04:34), as well as Ethiopians Haftu Teklu (2:04:43) and London and New York City runner-up Shura Kitata (2:04:49).
New York Marathon champion Albert Korir, former Japanese record-holder Suguru Osako, and Norwegian record-holder Sondre Moen are also in the field, as are Morocco&rsquo;s Zouhair Talbi, winner of last week&rsquo;s Houston Marathon in a course record 2:06:39, and multiple NCAA champion Edward Cheserek.

World Athletics has launched &lsquo;<a href="https://worldathletics.org/stats-zone/road-to/7180312">Road to&nbsp;Glasgow 24</a>&rsquo; and &lsquo;<a href="https://worldathletics.org/stats-zone/road-to/7193343">Road to Bahamas 24</a>&rsquo; to help athletes, media and fans track the qualification process for the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24 in March and the World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24 in May.
Searchable by discipline, country and qualification status, the online tool provides a real-time view of each event over the course of the qualification periods for the two World Athletics Series events.
The qualification period for WIC Glasgow 24 ends on 18 February, while for WRE Bahamas 24 it ends on 7 April.
The <a href="https://worldathletics.org/news/press-releases/qualification-system-indoor-championships-glasgow-24" target="_blank" rel="noopener">qualification system</a> for WIC Glasgow 24 was released in April.
It is the first time that the 'Road to' qualification tracking tool has been used for the World Indoor Championships or the World Athletics Relays, following the launch of the tool for the World Athletics Championships in 2022 and 2023 and the Olympic Games in 2021 and 2024.
The &lsquo;Road to&rsquo; tool is only intended to give an overview of which athletes and teams are in qualifying positions; it doesn&rsquo;t, and will not, indicate which athletes or teams have been selected for entry by their member federation. Final entries will be published nearer to the time of the events in Glasgow and Bahamas.

Organisers of the Czech Indoor Gala have announced another wave of global and European medallists for the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Ostrava on 30 January.
Two-time world indoor champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand leads a strong field for the men&rsquo;s shot put. The 2017 world champion, who holds the Oceania record of 22.90m, will take on four men who have won continental titles: European champion Filip Mihaljevic, 2021 European indoor champion Tomas Stanek, 2018 European champion Michal Haratyk and 2017 European indoor champion Konrad Bukowiecki.
Despite winning his first world indoor medal almost a decade ago, this will be Walsh&rsquo;s first indoor competition outside of the World Indoor Championships.
Two more reigning European champions will be in action in the women&rsquo;s 60m hurdles, taking on the woman who won in Ostrava last year.
USA&rsquo;s Alaysha Johnson clocked 7.87 to win the Czech Indoor Gala in 2023, then went on to clock a PB of 7.82 and win the US indoor title. The Pan-American bronze medallist, who has an outdoor PB of 12.35, will face European champion Pia Skrzyszkowska, European indoor champion Reetta Hurske and 2018 world indoor bronze medallist Nadine Visser.
Three-time world indoor champion Pavel Maslak takes on Hungarian record-holder Attila Molnar in the men&rsquo;s 400m. World mixed relay bronze medallist Patrik Sorm and multiple Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Pohorilko are also in the line-up.

More global stars added to Ostrava line-up

Global silver medallists Laura Muir and Elle St Pierre &ndash; the two most recent winners of the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games &ndash; will toe the line again at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting on 11 February.
Olympic 1500m silver medallist Muir made her Wanamaker Mile debut last year, winning in 4:20.15. The 2022 world bronze medallist holds the British record for the distance outdoors with the 4:15.24 she clocked last year.
World indoor silver medallist St Pierre set a meeting and North American record of 4:16.85 to win the Wanamaker Mile in 2020. The 2024 indoor season marks St Pierre&rsquo;s return to the track following the birth of her first child.
Two-time world indoor silver medallist Axumawit Embaye is also in the line-up, alongside 2022 US 1500m champion Sinclaire Johnson, British 1500m champion Katie Snowden, 2023 Wanamaker Mile runner-up Josette Andrews, Australian record-holder Jessica Hull, Olympic finalist Marta Perez, and two-time NCAA champion Sage Hurta-Klecker.
Other top athletes already confirmed to compete include Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Danielle Williams, Nia Ali, Andre De Grasse, Josh Kerr, Keni Harrison, Chris Nilsen, KC Lightfoot, Yared Nuguse, Alicia Monson, Grant Fisher and Christian Coleman.
