Niklas Kaul achieved the Olympic standard with 8484 points to claim his first Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting decathlon victory, while Carolin Schafer scored 6369 to win the heptathlon for the third time at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold event on Saturday and Sunday (17-18).
Germany&rsquo;s 2019 world champion Kaul surpassed the World Championships qualification standard of 8460 points for Budapest when winning his European title last year and in Ratingen he bettered that mark again to beat the standard for the Olympic Games in Paris.
He did so by 24 points, scoring his fourth-best ever tally and winning by 103 ahead of Spain&rsquo;s Jorge Urena (8381) and Netherlands&rsquo; Rik Taam (8326), who both achieved PBs.
In the heptathlon, Schafer added another victory to her wins from 2017 and 2018, taking top spot ahead of her compatriot and the 2022 winner in Ratingen, Sophie Weissenberg (6247), and Netherlands&rsquo; Emma Oosterwegel (6209).
The decathlon was close throughout the first day of action. Dutch indoor champion Sven Jansons was the surprise early leader after setting a PB of 10.65 in the 100m and following it with a windy 7.53m in the long jump and 13.63m in the shot put. But soon after, the 21-year-old was forced to withdraw from the competition due to adductor issues.
A 2.04m leap from Urena propelled the Spaniard into the overall lead, just ahead of German duo Nico Beckers and Felix Wolter. Of that lead trio, Wolter had performed best in the 100m (10.72) and long jump (7.69m), while Beckers excelled in the shot put (15.86m).
Wolter closed the gap on Urena in the 400m, running 47.59, but Urena&rsquo;s 48.39 clocking was just enough to ensure he held on to the lead at the end of the first day with a score of 4292, five points ahead of Wolter. Beckers ran 48.60 in the 400m, while Taam produced the fastest time of the day (47.18), moving him from sixth to fourth overall.
Kaul was in fifth place after a solid first day, highlighted by his second-best ever long jump (7.34m) and his third-best ever 400m (48.21). He also ran 11.50 (-1.7m/s) in the 100m, threw 14.66m in the shot put and cleared 2.04m in the high jump and was just 135 points shy of leader Urena with several strong events to come on day two.
Urena picked up from where he left off on Sunday, recording the fastest time in the 110m hurdles of 14.00. Wolter retained his No.2 spot with a 14.28 PB, while Kaul got close to his PB with 14.31.
A throw of 48.57m in the discus &ndash; his second-best ever mark &ndash; launched Kaul from fifth to first and although he dropped down to third behind Taam and Urena after this 4.80m clearance in the pole vault, his 67.44m in the javelin &ndash; more than 11 metres below his best, in an event in which he was trying a new technique &ndash; put him back on top and his winning time of 4:14.19 in the 1500m ensured he stayed there.
Urena held on to his second place, throwing 39.37m in the discus and then clearing 4.90m in the pole vault and throwing 64.00m &ndash; just 2cm off his 2015 PB &ndash; in the javelin, before running a 1500m PB of 4:24.04 to add 59 points to his previous decathlon best achieved at the Olympics in Tokyo.
Taam also achieved a 1500m PB, running 4:20.99, which came after a 14.47 110m hurdles performance, 47.29m discus throw, 5.00m pole vault clearance and 57.63m javelin throw. He also leapt a long jump PB of 7.33m on day one to help him to a decathlon lifetime best of 8326, taking him above 8300 points for the first time.
Belgium&rsquo;s Thomas Van der Plaetsen finished the first day in sixth place but a javelin throw of 68.94m &ndash; a PB by more than three metres &ndash; moved him up to third and he eventually finished fourth after a 4:45.91 1500m, taking him to a 8233 tally. Wolter finished fifth on 8118 points as a total of seven decathletes surpassed 8000 points, Germany&rsquo;s Tim Nowak scoring 8075 and his compatriot Jannis Wolff 8033 to achieve a 8000 point-plus score for the first time following a performance that featured PBs in four disciplines, including 46.00m in the discus to add almost five metres to his previous best.
On the hunt for her third win in Ratingen, Schafer led the heptathlon with 3812 points at the end of the first day, 68 ahead of Weissenberg.

Belgium&rsquo;s world and Olympic champion Nafi Thiam, who was contesting just a few selected disciplines in Ratingen instead of the full heptathlon, posted the fastest time of the day in the 100m hurdles with 13.38, but Schafer was close behind (13.43), giving her an early advantage over Weissenberg (13.67).
But Weissenberg responded with 1.81m in the high jump, six centimetres higher than Schafer&rsquo;s best, to take the overall lead.
The standings changed again after the shot put, where Schafer threw 14.75m &ndash; her best mark since 2017, the year in which she earned world heptathlon silver. Weissenberg managed 13.33m to slip to third in the overall standings behind USA&rsquo;s Shaina Burns, who threw 13.56m.
Schafer&rsquo;s momentum continued in the 200m as she finished ahead of her compatriot once more, 23.88 to 24.03. It gave Schafer an overall leading tally of 3812 &ndash; her best day-one score since the 2018 European Championships.
Weissenberg ended day one with a score of 3744, about 100 points shy of the first-day score she achieved last month in G&ouml;tzis where she finished fifth with 6375.
Thiam skipped the high jump, but threw 15.20m in the shot put and ran 24.45 in the 200m.
Weissenberg leapt into the lead at the start of day two with 6.31m in the long jump, the second-farthest mark of the day behind Thiam&rsquo;s 6.59m, as Schafer recorded 5.83m and moved into second spot.
Schafer was No.1 again after the javelin, however, as she threw 50.23m in a discipline topped by Thiam&rsquo;s 52.61m. Schafer then clocked 2:14.94 to triumph by 122 points, as Weissenberg ran 2:22.24 to hold on to her runner-up place.
Olympic bronze medallist Oosterwegel jumped from sixth to third with a 52.04m javelin throw after long jumping 5.83m and that is where she would stay as she won the 800m in 2:12.60 for an overall score of 6209 points.
Ireland&rsquo;s Kate O'Connor and Austria&rsquo;s 2019 world bronze medallist Verena Mayr, contesting her first heptathlon since the Olympic Games in Tokyo and following thigh problems, also surpassed 6000 points, scoring 6125 and 6023, respectively.

Some of the world&rsquo;s leading combined events athletes will be in action at the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting this weekend (17-18) when the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold event returns to the German town.
Germany&rsquo;s Sophie Weissenberg defends her heptathlon title, 2019 world champion Niklas Kaul contests his first full decathlon of the year, and multiple world and Olympic gold medallist Nafissatou Thiam tests herself in some of the disciplines as athletes look to make their mark in the lead up to the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 in August.
<h2>Weissenberg returns</h2>
Weissenberg, the 2019 European U23 silver medallist, heads back to the Stadionring where last year she won with 6273 points ahead of her German compatriot Carolin Schafer (6170), who also returns to compete in front of a home crowd.
Both athletes competed in Gotzis last month, Weissenberg finishing fifth with a PB of 6375 points and 2017 world silver medallist Schafer also surpassing 6300 points with 6312. They will be looking to build on those performances in Ratingen, as they go up against their compatriot Vanessa Grimm, Netherlands&rsquo; Olympic bronze medallist Emma Oosterwegel, Austria&rsquo;s 2019 world bronze medallist Verena Mayr and Canada&rsquo;s Georgia Ellenwood, the 2021 winner in Ratingen.
Grimm continues her return after injury, following the 6035-point performance she achieved in Gotzis. Mayr &ndash; who set her 6591 PB when winning in Ratingen in 2019 &ndash; is also on the comeback trail after thigh problems and will contest her first heptathlon since the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Other athletes to have surpassed 6000 points and who are in action in Ratingen are Ireland&rsquo;s Kate O'Connor, Esther Turpin of France, Marijke Esselink of the Netherlands, USA&rsquo;s Shaina Burns, Australia&rsquo;s Tori West and Taneille Crase, and of course Thiam, Belgium&rsquo;s two-time Olympic and two-time world gold medallist, who set her PB of 7013 points in Gotzis in 2017.
Thiam does not intend to contest a full heptathlon until the World Championships in Budapest and will be using the meeting in Ratingen as an opportunity to test her fitness in certain events.
The 28-year-old last competed at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, where she broke the world indoor pentathlon record with her score of 5055 points.
<h2>Kaul leads decathlon field&nbsp;</h2>
Kaul achieved the World Championships qualification standard of 8460 points when winning the European decathlon title in Munich last year and in Ratingen his aim will be to surpass that mark again to achieve the standard for the Olympic Games in Paris.
The 25-year-old &ndash; who set his PB of 8691 points when winning his world title in 2019 &ndash; will also be looking to make a statement after his compatriot Leo Neugebauer broke the long-standing national record with a 8836-point collegiate record at the NCAA Championships last week.
Kaul is among eight athletes with PBs over 8000 points who are competing in Ratingen. Belgium&rsquo;s Thomas Van der Plaetsen set his lifetime best of 8430 in Gotzis in 2021 and continues to work towards a return to top form following injury sustained at the Olympics in Tokyo. He competed at the Multistars in April before withdrawing with a niggle. Spain&rsquo;s Jorge Urena also set his PB of 8322 in 2021, that performance coming at the Olympic Games, while Netherlands&rsquo; Rik Taam had the competition of his career so far in Gotzis last year, scoring 8246 ponts.
Czechia&rsquo;s Adam Sebastian Helcelet contests his first decathlon of the season, as does Estonia&rsquo;s Risto Lillemets.
Looking to join their compatriot Kaul in Budapest are Tim Nowak and Felix Wolter, and they are both in action in Ratingen.

Combined events stars look to make a mark in Ratingen

US all-rounder Anna Hall gave the 7000-point barrier a scare at the Hypo Meeting in G&ouml;tzis, winning the heptathlon at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting with a world-leading 6988.
It means that, at just 22 years of age, Hall moves to fifth on the world all-time list behind the four members of the 7000-point club: Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Carolina Kluft, Nafissatou Thiam and Larisa Nikitina.
The Hypo Meeting decathlon title, meanwhile, remained in Canadian hands, but seven-time winner Damian Warner had to surrender his crown to compatriot Pierce LePage, who won with a world-leading 8700.
Hall, the world bronze medallist, set the tone for the weekend in the first discipline, winning the 100m hurdles in 12.75 to take 0.03 off the meeting record. She moved straight into the lead, and there she stayed for the duration of the competition.
US compatriot Taliyah Brooks finished second in the 100m hurdles (12.85), while Cuba&rsquo;s Adriana Rodriguez also dipped under 13 seconds to place third (12.97) ahead of Adrianna Sulek from Poland (13.18).
Hall set another PB in the high jump with 1.92m, a height that was matched by Croatia&rsquo;s 17-year-old Jana Koscak, the European U18 champion. Sulek moved into third after clearing 1.83m, while Britain&rsquo;s 2019 world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson cleared 1.89m to move to fourth place.
Two-time world U20 champion Saga Vanninen from Finland moved into fourth after winning the shot put with 14.98m. Hall recorded 13.90m to hold on to her lead ahead of Sulek, who improved her PB to 14.44m to move into second place. Johnson-Thompson, meanwhile, added six centimetres to her PB with 13.92m to remain in contention.
Hall&rsquo;s momentum continued in the 200m, which she won in a PB of 22.88, giving her a day-one score of 4172. Only Joyner-Kersee, the world record-holder, ever managed a better day-one score. Johnson-Thompson ran 23.26 to move into third place behind Sulek, who ran 23.80.
Despite producing the three best marks of the long jump at the start of day two &ndash; 6.54m PB, 6.51m and 6.50m &ndash; Hall was frustrated that she took off significantly behind the board on some of those attempts. Nevertheless, she extended her lead over Sulek and Johnson-Thompson, who jumped 6.29m and 6.32m respectively.
Vanninen also moved up the leaderboard thanks to a PB of 6.43m. But the discipline marked the exit of Multistars winner Brooks, who registered three no-jumps.
The top four were relatively evenly matched in the javelin, Hall maintaining her lead after throwing 43.08m and Johnson-Thompson overtaking Sulek with their respective efforts of 44.14m and 41.83m.
Heading into the final discipline, the 800m, Hall knew that she needed to take 0.87 off her already highly respectable PB (2:03.11) to achieve a 7000-point score. Hall &ndash; who won the US indoor 400m title earlier this year &ndash; went out hard, covering the first lap in 58.51. She held on well in the second half and eventually crossed the line in a PB of 2:02.97, bringing her score to 6988.
Both Hall&rsquo;s 800m performance and her overall score are the second-best marks ever achieved in G&ouml;tzis. Having added 233 points to her PB, Hall also moves to second on the North American all-time list.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m very happy with the score,&rdquo; said a delighted Hall, who made a big breakthrough last year to earn world bronze. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s incredible. The crowd carried me through. It&rsquo;s a dream. I am just 22 and I have time for a score over 7000 points. I am now focused on progressing. I will run the 400 metres hurdles in Florence next Friday and then I will return to the USA to get ready for the US National Championships and the World Championships.&rdquo;
Johnson-Thompson held off Sulek in the 800m, 2:12.40 to 2:14.33, to claim second place in 6556 &ndash; her best score since the 2019 World Championships. Sulek was third in 6480.
Vanninen improved her PB to 6391 to finish fourth, while Germany&rsquo;s Sophie Weissenberg completed the top five with a PB of 6375. Annie Kunz (6330), Sofie Dokter (6321) and Carolin Schaefer (6321) also broke 6300. Koscak, meanwhile, received the &lsquo;Rookie of the Meeting&rsquo; award after finishing ninth with 6293.
World and Olympic silver medallist Anouk Vetter withdrew from the competition on day two as a precaution due to a slight achilles injury.
<h2>LePage succeeds Warner</h2>
As was the case in the heptathlon, the winner of the first decathlon discipline went on to take the overall title. But the lead changed hands more often in the men&rsquo;s contest.
Pierce LePage was fastest in the 100m with a PB of 10.28, matched by Kendrick Thompson of The Bahamas. Olympic champion Damian Warner was close behind with 10.29, while Olympic bronze medallist Ashley Moloney clocked 10.39.
&ldquo;I haven&rsquo;t competed for a while, so I didn&rsquo;t expect a PB,&rdquo; said LePage. &ldquo;It was the first time that I&rsquo;ve beaten Warner in the 100m.&rdquo;
Warner&rsquo;s 7.75m leap in the long jump gave him the overall lead from LePage, who jumped 7.57m. Moloney moved up to third with 7.60m, but European silver medallist Simon Ehammer had three fouls in the discipline at which he is the world bronze medallist.
Grenada&rsquo;s Lindon Victor moved into contention after throwing 16.13m in the shot put, but at the top of the leaderboard Warner held on to his lead after throwing 14.92m to LePage&rsquo;s 15.05m. Moloney, meanwhile, improved his PB to 15.20m to remain in third.
Norway&rsquo;s European indoor silver medallist Sander Skotheim cleared 2.15m to win the high jump, climbing from 11th to third overall. LePage cleared 2.03m to close the gap on Warner, who jumped 2.00m to maintain his overall lead by just six points.
A 47.66 run from Warner in the 400m helped increase his margin over LePage, who clocked 48.01. Moloney was quickest overall with a meeting record of 46.46, consolidating his third place. Skotheim, meanwhile, set a PB of 47.64.
At the start of the second day, Warner won the 110m hurdles in 13.60, edging Finley Gaio by 0.02. LePage finished in 13.87 to keep his compatriot within his sights.
But the tables turned in the discus, as LePage out-performed Warner by more than three metres, 49.34m to 46.32m, giving LePage a nine-point lead.
LePage went on to extend his lead over the next two disciplines, clearing 5.00m to Warner&rsquo;s 4.50m in the pole vault, and throwing a PB of 63.09m in the javelin to finish comfortably ahead of Warner (59.92m). Skotheim held third place for the duration of the second day, but Moloney had a disappointing pole vault and javelin and so did not start for the 1500m.
Going into the final discipline, LePage had a 206-point lead over Warner, which translates to roughly half a minute in 1500m terms.
Skotheim won the 1500m with a PB of 4:19.38, but the focus was on the two Canadians behind him. Warner finished in 4:26.16 while LePage followed in 4:45.74, giving him a winning score of 8700. Warner took second place overall with 8619 and Skotheim was rewarded with a massive PB of 8590, earning him the men&rsquo;s &lsquo;Rookie of the Meeting&rsquo; award.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s my first time winning G&ouml;tzis, and my first international win since 2019,&rdquo; said LePage, whose winning score was just one point shy of his PB. &ldquo;The crowd was amazing. Damian pushed me the entire way. He is still the king of G&ouml;tzis.
&ldquo;I came here to have fun,&rdquo; he added. &ldquo;The javelin PB came from nowhere. This was one of my least favourite disciplines in the past. It was not a perfect competition.&rdquo;
Warner was magnanimous in defeat. &ldquo;The better man won today,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a matter of time before Pierce LePage is on the big stage and is putting up big numbers. He is coming and I am coming up with him. It was the toughest battle I&rsquo;ve had for a while, but I never thought about giving up.&rdquo;
One month after winning the Multistars meeting, Estonia&rsquo;s Karel Tilga was fourth with 8403. Germany&rsquo;s Manuel Eitel was fifth a PB of 8351 ahead of Australia&rsquo;s Daniel Golubovic (8301) and Lindon Victor (8293).

Olympic champion Damian Warner and Olympic silver medallist Anouk Vetter will be in the spotlight at the Hypomeeting in G&ouml;tzis, a World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting, this weekend (27-28).
Warner will compete at the M&ouml;sle-Stadium for the 10th time in pursuit of a record-extending eighth win at the meeting. The Canadian star became the first decathlete to win the Hypomeeting six times in 2021, scoring a then PB of 8995 points. The performance was highlighted by his 10.14 in the 100m and an 8.28m long jump, which was a world decathlon best at the time.
Warner went on to win Olympic gold in Tokyo with a national record of 9018 points, becoming the fourth decathlete in history to surpass the 9000-point barrier. He then won world indoor heptathlon gold in Belgrade in 2022, setting another national record and the second best performance on the all-time list with 6489 points, before clinching his seventh overall &ndash; and sixth consecutive &ndash; victory in G&ouml;tzis with 8797 points.
This weekend Warner returns to decathlon action for the first time since last July when he suffered a hamstring strain during the 400m at the World Championships in Oregon.
Warner&rsquo;s compatriot Pierce LePage will make his fourth appearance at the Hypomeeting. LePage placed second behind Warner in G&ouml;tzis in 2021 with 8534 and won the world silver medal in Oregon with a lifetime best of 8701. He also finished fifth at both the 2019 World Championships in Doha and at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Simon Ehammer from Switzerland broke Warner&rsquo;s world decathlon long jump best with 8.30m in Ratingen in 2022 and improved the mark to 8.45m at last year&rsquo;s edition of the Hypomeeting en route to third place with 8377 points. Ehammer won world indoor heptathlon silver behind Warner with a national record of 6363 points in Belgrade and he also claimed world bronze in the long jump with 8.16m in Oregon and European silver in the decathlon with a national record of 8468 points in Munich.
He opened his 2023 season with 8.12m in the long jump and a PB of 13.43 in the 110m hurdles in Basel on 13 May.
The Swiss contingent also features Finley Gaio, who finished fifth in the European Championships 110m hurdles final and set a decathlon PB of 7949 in G&ouml;tzis last year.
Lindon Victor from Grenada returns to G&ouml;tzis, where he placed second last year with 8447 before finishing fifth at the World Championships in Oregon. He went on to win Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham and won at the Decastar meeting in Talence, setting a national record of 8550. He was later rewarded for his consistency as he took the overall title in the 2022 World Athletics Combined Events Tour. Particularly strong in the javelin, Victor set his PB of 71.56m in that discipline en route to his seventh place at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Australia&rsquo;s Ashley Moloney is also back in G&ouml;tzis, where he finished 13th with 8038 on his debut in 2019 and received the 'rookie of the meeting' award. Moloney, who won the world U20 title in Tampere in 2018, went on to claim two bronze medals at the Olympic Games with an Oceanian record of 8649 points and at the World Indoor Championships in with another area record of 6344 points, the highest third-place tally for a heptathlon competition. He will be joined by his compatriot and training partner Cedric Dubler, who won Commonwealth Games bronze in Birmingham and finished eighth at the World Championships in Oregon with 8246.
Sander Skotheim from Norway will make his debut in G&ouml;tzis after a successful indoor season highlighted by European indoor heptathlon silver, while Karel Tilga from Estonia will compete in his second decathlon competition in a month after winning at the Multistars in Desenzano del Garda with a meeting record of 8482 points.
The Belgian contingent will feature European U20 champion Jente Hauttekeete and Niels Pittomvils, seventh at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade in 2017.
The line-up also includes Poland&rsquo;s 2021 European indoor bronze medallist Paweł Wiesiolek, Sweden&rsquo;s 2019 European indoor fourth-place finisher Fredrick Samuelsson and USA&rsquo;s Devon Williams, third at this year&rsquo;s Multistars in Desenzano.
<h2>Vetter aims to retain</h2>
Vetter became the first Dutch heptathlon winner in Hypomeeting history last year with a score of 6693, adding four points to the national record she set at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, where she won silver. In the 2022 edition of the G&ouml;tzis meeting Vetter broke Nafissatou Thiam&rsquo;s meeting record in the javelin with a sensational throw of 59.81m.
Vetter went on to win world silver in Oregon with another national record of 6867 points, five years after her bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships in London.
The strong Dutch contingent also features Emma Oosterwegel, the Olympic bronze medallist in Tokyo with 6590 who also finished seventh at the World Championships with 6440, plus Sofie Dokter and Marijke Esselink, who finished fourth and 10th respectively at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul.
Adrianna Sulek from Poland returns to G&ouml;tzis, where she improved her PB to 6429 points to finish second last year. Sulek &ndash; the overall World Athletics Combined Events Tour winner in 2022 &ndash; won world indoor silver with 4851 points in Belgrade and improved the Polish record to 6672 points to finish fourth at the World Championships in Oregon. She started 2023 with a pentathlon silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul with 5014 points, surpassing the previous world record set by Nataliya Dobrynska at the 2012 World Indoor Championships in the same arena. Finishing first in the 800m, Sulek held the world record for about six seconds, but she had to settle for No.2 all time, as Thiam followed her over the finish line to improve the mark even further, achieving 5055 points.
NCAA champion Anna Hall will make her debut in G&ouml;tzis. The 22-year-old won world bronze, becoming the third-best heptathlete in US history with her PB of 6755 points. She holds the third-fastest ever heptathlon 800m time with 2:03.11 and has a PB of 54.48 in the 400m hurdles. This year Hall broke Brianne Theisen-Eaton&rsquo;s North American record with 5004 points in the pentathlon at the US Indoor Championships and at the same championships she later won the 400m, clocking a PB of 51.03.&nbsp;

USA&rsquo;s Taliyah Brooks will compete in her second heptathlon meeting this year after taking the win at Multistars with a world-leading score of 6330 points. There she performed well in the long jump, leaping 6.65m in what is one of her strongest events &ndash; one in which she holds a PB of 6.78m. She also excels in the 100m hurdles and has a PB of 12.61.
The other top US heptathlete is Annie Kunz, who won the US Olympic Trials in 2021 with her PB of 6703 and finished sixth at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
British combined events star Katarina Johnson-Thompson returns to the M&ouml;sle-Stadium, scene of her victories in 2014 (6682) and 2019 (6813).
The 2019 world champion, who improved Jessica Ennis-Hill&rsquo;s national record when she won in Doha with 6981, claimed her second consecutive Commonwealth Games crown in Birmingham last year in her most recent heptathlon competition. The 2018 world indoor pentathlon champion clocked 13.73 in the 100m hurdles and threw 13.13m in the shot put in Loughborough last weekend.
Great Britain will be also represented by Jade O&rsquo;Dowda, Holly Mills and Niamh Emerson. O&rsquo;Dowda won bronze at the Commonwealth Games and placed second in Desenzano del Garda this year, while Mills finished fourth at both the World Indoor Championships and Commonwealth Games and Emerson is the 2018 world U20 gold medallist.
Hungary&rsquo;s Xenia Krizsan has fond memories of G&ouml;tzis, as she won this meeting in 2021 with a national record of 6651. She finished fifth at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul with 4493.
German star Carolin Sch&auml;fer also returns to the Hypomeeting, where she has claimed three top three finishes (2015-17). Sch&auml;fer won world silver in London in 2017 and European bronze in Berlin 2018. The German contingent also includes Sophie Weissenberg and Vanessa Grimm, who was third in last year&rsquo;s edition of the Hypomeeting with her lifetime best of 6323.
The rising star to watch is Saga Vanninen from Finland, who won two world U20 titles in Nairobi in 2021 and Cali in 2022 as well as European U20 gold in Tallin in 2021 with her lifetime best of 6271.
Other athletes with a PB over 6200 are Canada&rsquo;s Georgia Ellenwood, Cuba&rsquo;s Adriana Rodriguez, Maria Huntington from Finland and Paulina Ligarska from Poland.
Austrian hopes are carried by 2016 world U20 gold medallist Sara Lagger, who finished fourth at this year&rsquo;s Multistars with 6010 in her first heptathlon competition since July 2021, when she finished fourth at the European U23 Championships. She is joined by local athlete Chiara-Belinda Schuler, who won the bronze medal at the European U18 Championships in 2018.

Warner and Vetter defend titles against strong fields in Götzis 

Estonia&rsquo;s Karel Tilga set a meeting record of 8482 to win the decathlon at Multistars, while USA&rsquo;s Taliyah Brooks set a PB of 6330 to take the heptathlon at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting in Desenzano del Garda on Sunday (30).
Tilga, who won NCAA outdoor and indoor titles in 2021, opened his account with an 11.16 clocking in the 100m &ndash; his fastest time in two years. Switzerland&rsquo;s Nino Portmann ran the fastest time in the opening discipline, clocking 10.75 to put him ahead of Brazil&rsquo;s Felipe Dos Santos (10.82) and USA&rsquo;s Devon Williams (10.97).
Tilga shot up the leaderboard after the long jump, thanks to his 7.66m leap &ndash; the best mark of the day &ndash; which put him in second place overall, just 12 points behind Williams, who jumped 7.54m.
Germany&rsquo;s Nils Laserich produced the best throw in the shot put, setting a PB of 16.26m to move up into second place, while Tilga improved his PB to 16.19m to take the overall lead &ndash; a position he did not relinquish for the remainder of the competition. Williams also set a PB of 14.52m to hold on to his podium position ahead of 2016 European champion Thomas van der Plaetsen, who also threw a PB of 14.72m.
Tilga extended his lead in the high jump, thanks to a 2.07m clearance, once again making him the top performer of the day. He ended the first day with a 400m PB of 48.71, giving him a half-way score of 4402 and a lead of more than 200 points over Laserich, who ran 48.44 in the one-lap sprint.
The overall leader continued his strong form on day two, setting a PB of 14.85 &ndash; his first sub-15-second clocking &ndash; in the 110m hurdles. Brazil&rsquo;s Jose Fernando Ferreira Santana was fastest in that discipline, clocking 14.00 to finish 0.11 ahead of Williams.
The 2.01m tall Tilga put his wing span to good use in the discus, posting the best throw of the day with 45.46m to extend his lead over Williams, who threw 44.95m.
Sweden&rsquo;s Fredrik Samuelsson, back in form after a long period of battling back to full health, was the top performer in the pole vault, along with Italy&rsquo;s Lorenzo Naidon, both men clearing 4.95m. It moved Samuelsson into third place overall, just five points behind Williams, who cleared 4.45m. Tilga, meanwhile, held on to his comfortable lead after vaulting an outdoor PB of 4.75m.
A mighty throw of 64.05m in the javelin extended Tilga&rsquo;s lead to more than 300 points over Samuelsson, who threw 60.73m to move pas Williams (57.19m) into second place. With victory essentially guaranteed, Tilga&rsquo;s focus in the final discipline was to run faster than 4:35.60 to break Andrei Krauchanka&rsquo;s meeting record of 8390.
Tilga went above and beyond, smashing his 1500m PB by five seconds (4:21.91) to finish with a winning score of 8482.
&ldquo;It was my first competition of the year, so I didn&rsquo;t really know what to expect,&rdquo; said Tilga, who became just the second Estonian decathlete to win at Multistars, after Ingeorg Kaseorg, who won in 1995 and 2001. &ldquo;Apart from the 100m, the running events were generally good. The pole vault was held in hard windy conditions.&rdquo;
Samuelsson finished second with 8070 &ndash; his best score since 2018 &ndash; and Williams was third with 7956.
<h2>Brooks breaks through with lifetime best</h2>
USA&rsquo;s Taliyah Brooks achieved her first ever victory on the World Combined Events Tour, doing so with a heptathlon PB of 6330.
The 28-year-old, who is a world-class hurdler in her own right, was pushed by US compatriot Chari Hawkins in the 100m hurdles, Hawkins getting the verdict in the opening discipline, 13.19 to Brooks&rsquo; 13.23.
The US duo then both cleared 1.77m in the high jump, as did Britain&rsquo;s Commonwealth bronze medallist Jade O&rsquo;Dowda, which put them all into the top three overall. Hawkins extended her lead in the shot put, thanks to her 13.35m throw, while Brooks remained in second place overall after throwing 13.01m and O&rsquo;Dowda stayed in third (13.19m).
But the positions changed after the final event of the first day, with Brooks clocking 24.06 in the 200m, giving her a six-point lead over Hawkins (24.43). with O&rsquo;Dowda remaining in third (24.87).
Brooks held on to her lead throughout the second day, helped in no small part by her 6.65m leap in the long jump. O&rsquo;Dowda&rsquo;s 6.33m effort was enough to move her above Hawkins in the overall standings.
Brooks&rsquo; 39.00m throw in the javelin may have only ranked her ninth in the field, but significantly it was a PB for the US all-rounder, keeping her on track for a lifetime best score. Hawkins (42.10m) made up a bit of ground and overtook O&rsquo;Dowda, who threw 40.51m, but Brooks had a lead of almost 200 points going into the final discipline, the 800m.
Poland&rsquo;s Edyta Byelska ran a gun-to-tape race to cross the line first in the 800m in 2:08.62. Brooks, meanwhile, improved her PB to 2:15.02 to secure victory and win with 6330, a PB by 78 points.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m happy with my performance this weekend,&rdquo; said Brooks, who will return to the US for two weeks before turning her attention to the Hypo Meeting in Gotzis. &ldquo;Usually I wasn&rsquo;t consistent on the second day, but here I performed better in the events where I worked harder.&rdquo;
O&rsquo;Dowda regained second place in the overall standings after finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of Hawkins in the 800m, 2:12.07 to 2:22.51. O&rsquo;Dowda finished with 6178 and Hawkins scored 6036.

Tilga breaks Multistars record with 8482 in Desenzano del Garda

Markus Rooth returns to defend his decathlon title, while Taliyah Brooks and Chari Hawkins are among those on the hunt for heptathlon success at the GardaStars by Multistars &ndash; the first World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold event of 2023 &ndash; this weekend (29-30).
The 36th edition of the major Italian combined events meeting returns to the Tre Stelle athletics track in Desenzano del Garda on the shores of Lake Garda after moving to Florence, Lana and Grosseto in the past decade.
The heptathlon field features USA's Brooks and Hawkins, who hold PBs of 6252 and 6243 points, respectively.
Brooks won the NCAA indoor pentathlon title in 2018 with a score of 4572 points and holds PBs of 12.61 in the 100m hurdles and 6.78m in the long jump.
Hawkins won the US indoor pentathlon title with 4492 points in Spokane in 2022 and finished first in the Combined Events Tour Gold meeting in Arona with a heptathlon PB of 6243 points later that year.
Sarah Lagger from Austria will make her second appearance at the Multistars, two years after finishing fifth with 6111. Lagger is a two-time world U20 heptathlon medallist, who won gold in Bydgoszcz in 2016 with 5960 points and silver in Tampere in 2018 with a national U20 record of 6225 points.
Jade O&rsquo;Dowda will be looking to continue the strong British tradition at the Multistars. O&rsquo;Dowda won bronze at the Commonwealth Games on home soil in Birmingham with 6212 points and placed seventh at the European Championships in Munich with 6187 last August.
Italian hopes are carried by national indoor pentathlon record-holder Sveva Gerevini, who will be aiming to improve her PB of 6028 set last year at the European Championships in Munich and possibly come close to the national heptathlon record of 6185 set by Gertrud Bacher at the Multistars in 1999. Gerevini placed second at last year&rsquo;s Multistars with 6011 and finished eighth at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul in the pentathlon last March with 4363.
Other contenders include Alysbeth Felix Boyer from Puerto Rico (national record 6124), Myke Van de Wiel from the Netherlands (PB 6012), Edyla Bielska from Poland (PB 5945) and Jodie Smith from Great Britain (PB 5929).
In the decathlon, Norway&rsquo;s Rooth will return with the aim of repeating his win at last year&rsquo;s edition. Rooth set a national record of 8307 points when winning in Grosseto in 2022, beating his compatriot Sander Skotheim. Athletes from Norway have won the decathlon at four of the past six editions of the Multistars through Lars Rise (2016), Martin Roe in 2018 and 2021, and Rooth last year, and the 21-year-old will hope to continue this proud tradition.
The line-up also features two athletes with PBs over 8400 points: Karel Tilga from Estonia and Thomas Van der Plaetsen from Belgium. Tilga won the NCAA indoor heptathlon title in 2021 with 6264 points and the NCAA decathlon title in Eugene in 2021 with 8261 points, while he set his PB of 8484 points in Athens, Georgia, in 2021.
Van der Plaetsen won European gold in Amsterdam in 2016 with 8218 points and placed eighth at the Olympic Games in Rio with 8332. The Belgian athlete then finished third in Gotzis in 2021 with his PB of 8430.
The other leading contenders are three 8300-point-plus performers: USA&rsquo;s Devon Williams (PB 8345), Poland&rsquo;s Pawel Wiesiolek (PB 8333) and Brazil&rsquo;s Felipe dos Santos (PB 8364).
Willams, brother of heptathlon specialist Kendell Williams, won the US decathlon title in 2019 with 8295 points and the NCAA indoor heptathlon title in 2017 with 6177 points.
Wiesiolek won the Multistars in Florence in 2015 and finished third in the heptathlon with 6133 points at the European Indoor Championships in Torun in 2021. The Polish athlete set a decathlon PB of 8333 points in Warsaw in 2021.
Dos Santos set his PB of 8364 in Sao Paulo in 2020 and finished second at the 2021 South American Championships in Guayaquil.
Two other top European decathletes in the field are Germany&rsquo;s Tim Nowak, who set his PB of 8229 in 2018 and won two bronze medals at the 2013 European U20 Championships and the 2014 World U20 Championships, and Sweden&rsquo;s Fredrik Samuelsson, who placed fourth at the European Indoor Championships in 2019 and set his decathlon PB of 8172 in Gotzis in 2017.
The hopes of Italian fans are carried by national indoor heptathlon champion Lorenzo Naidon and 2021 national decathlon champion Lorenzo Modugno.
Olympic 100m champion Marcell Jacobs will be the special guest on Saturday. Jacobs grew up in Desenzano and started his athletics career under the guidance of Gianni Lombardi, the Multistars meeting director.

Brooks and Hawkins head heptathlon, Rooth to defend decathlon title at Multistars

Poland&rsquo;s Adrianna Sulek and Grenada&rsquo;s Lindon Victor are the winners of the 2022 World Athletics Combined Events Tour, rewarding their season-long consistency in the heptathlon and decathlon respectively.
The Combined Events Tour, which this year replaced the former Combined Events Challenge, takes athletes&rsquo; best three marks across the series and converts them into performance scores (as also used by the world rankings system). Winners of the Combined Events Tour receive a wildcard entry for the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23, as well as a US$30,000 bonus.

Sulek enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2022, which began with her silver medal at the World Indoor Championships Belgrade 22. That strong form continued outdoors on the Combined Events Tour, starting with her victory on home soil in Bydgoszcz at the Wiesław Czapiewski Memorial, the newest addition to the Gold level meetings on the tour, and a meeting that is named in memory of her former coach.
Just two weeks later, Sulek smashed her PB to finish second at the prestigious Hypo Meeting in G&ouml;tzis, scoring 6429. That remained her PB until the World Athletics Championships Oregon22, where she scored 6672. Although she narrowly missed out on a medal, ultimately placing fourth, she found consolation in the fact that she broke the long-standing Polish record.
Sulek ended her season by taking silver at the European Championships with 6532 &ndash; her fourth heptathlon this year in which she has exceeded 6400 points.
Annik Kalin finished second in the series, following a great season for the Swiss all-rounder. She won at the Multistars meeting in Grosseto with a national record of 6398. She went on to break that with her sixth-place finish at the World Championships (6464) and with her bronze medal at the European Championships (6515).
Emma Oosterwegel finished third in the series, having placed fifth in G&ouml;tzis (6265), seventh at the World Championships (6440) and joint first in Talence (6233).
Victor had a similarly high quality and consistent season. Like Sulek, Victor started the year by setting a national indoor record at the World Indoor Championships, scoring 6029. His first decathlon of the season was in G&ouml;tzis, where he finished second with 8447. He improved on that season&rsquo;s best when finishing fifth at the World Championships with 8474, his best score and placing at a global championships.
Just two weeks later he struck gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, but that event is not part of the Combined Events Tour, so he needed one more performance within the series. He headed to the Decastar meeting in Talence and not only won, but he broke his own national record in the process, scoring 8550.
That was enough to move him to the top of the tour leader board with 3608 points, ahead of Switzerland&rsquo;s Simon Ehammer and Sweden&rsquo;s Marcus Nilsson.
Ehammer made as much of an impact in the decathlon this year as he did in the long jump. He won in Ratingen with 8354, then improved on that national record with 8377 in G&ouml;tzis to finish third &ndash; a series in which he leaped a world decathlon best of 8.45m in the long jump. He focused on just the long jump at the World Championships, taking bronze, and then reverted back to the decathlon for the European Championships, earning silver with 8468.
Nilsson won in Arona (8115), while his fourth-place finishes in Ratingen (7927) and at the European Championships (8327) contributed to his third-place finish in the overall standings.

World indoor silver medallist Adrianna Sulek and Commonwealth champion Lindon Victor top the end-of-season standings

Sulek and Victor confirmed winners of World Athletics Combined Events Tour

Commonwealth champion Lindon Victor broke his own Grenadian record with 8550 to win the decathlon at the Decastar meeting in Talence on Sunday (18), winning the overall men&rsquo;s title in the World Athletics Combined Events Tour in the process.
The women&rsquo;s Decastar heptathlon title, meanwhile, went right down to the wire as Emma Oosterwegel of the Netherlands and Ivona Dadic of Austria ended in a tie for victory, both women scoring 6233.
Victor was contesting his fourth decathlon of the year, having finished second in G&ouml;tzis and fifth at the World Championships before his triumph at the Commonwealth Games, but he showed relatively little sign of fatigue in Talence at this late stage of the season.
The 29-year-old opened his campaign with a wind-assisted 10.61 (3.1m/s) in the 100m, finishing second to Germany&rsquo;s Manuel Eitel with 10.44. Switzerland&rsquo;s Finley Gaio was third in 10.63.
Gaio leapt into the lead after the long jump, soaring 7.76m. That was seven centimetres farther than USA&rsquo;s Steven Bastien, his mark a PB, while Victor recorded 7.49m and Eitel 7.29m.
Come the shot put it was Victor&rsquo;s turn to launch ahead thanks to a 15.75m throw, almost a metre farther than any of his rivals. France&rsquo;s Makenson Gletty recorded 14.88m and Eitel a 14.86m PB. Lithuania&rsquo;s Edgaras Benkunskas topped the high jump with 2.08m, while Estonia&rsquo;s Risto Lillemets and USA&rsquo;s Jack Flood both cleared 2.05m and Victor 2.02m.
Victor ended day one with a win in his 400m heat, clocking a PB of 48.20 for the day&rsquo;s third-quickest time behind Germany&rsquo;s Malik Diakite (47.74) and Gaio with (48.19), giving the Grenadian an overnight score of 4438 and a 128-point lead over Gaio.
Victor&rsquo;s strong series continued on Sunday, starting the day with a 14.70 run in the 110m hurdles, just a few hundredths shy of his season&rsquo;s best. Gaio, an international-standard hurdler in his own right, dominated that event with a 13.68 run, giving him a brief lead before slipping down the leaderboard over the course of the day.
But Victor responded in the next event, throwing 51.00m &ndash; the best mark of the day &ndash; in the discus to regain the lead. Eitel remained in contention too, throwing 43.53m.
Victor equalled his 4.80m season&rsquo;s best in the pole vault and followed it with a 66.01m throw in the javelin, another strong event for the Grenadian, giving him a lead of almost 400 points going into the final event. &nbsp;Eitel remained in second place, following his 4.80m vault and a 60.51m javelin throw. Lillemets, meanwhile, climbed up to third place thanks to a 5.00m vault and 59.82m javelin throw.
Diakite was a comfortable winner of the 1500m, but all eyes were on Victor and whether he&rsquo;d do enough to break his own national record. He pulled out a lifetime best of 4:43.74, bringing his score to 8550 &ndash; an 11-point improvement on his previous best.
Eitel and Lillemets held on to their podium places, finishing second and third respectively with scores of 8193 and 8149. France&rsquo;s Makenson Gletty was close behind in fourth (8141).
In the heptathlon, 2018 world indoor pentathlon silver medallist Dadic started with 13.81 in the 100m hurdles, won by France&rsquo;s Esther Turpin in 13.51 from Oosterwegel, the Olympic bronze medallist, in 13.66.
Sweden&rsquo;s Bianca Salming topped the high jump, clearing 1.86m as USA&rsquo;s Ashtin Zamzow-Mahler managed 1.80m and Dadic and Turpin both went over 1.77m. Next up was the shot put, Switzerland&rsquo;s Geraldine Ruckstuhl leading the way with a PB throw of 14.68m, adding 10 centimetres to her previous best. Salming had the second best mark of 14.41m, while Oosterwegel threw 13.75m and Dadic 13.68m.
The day came to a close with the 200m, Dadic clocking 24.11 to give her a day-one score of 3689, 112 points ahead of Salming. Oosterwegel, meanwhile, was further down in fifth, almost 200 points adrift of the leader.
Dadic extended her lead in the first event of the second day, leaping 6.01m in the long jump. Oosterwegel recorded a best of 5.92m, moving her into second place overall.
But everything changed in the javelin. Oosterwegel launched her spear out to a lifetime best of 55.47m and catapulting herself into the lead, nine points ahead of Dadic, who threw 43.92m.
Dadic knew she had to finish a stride ahead of Oosterwegel in the final event, the 800m, to claw back the points deficit and regain the lead. And she did indeed finish ahead, clocking 2:11.12 to Oosterwegel&rsquo;s 2:11.78, but it was &lsquo;only&rsquo; enough to bring her level with the Dutch all-rounder, both women scoring 6233. Salming held on to third place with 6028.
The performance also elevated Oosterwegel up to third in the overall Combined Events Tour standings.

The Decastar in Talence welcomes athletes for the final World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting of the season this weekend (17-18), when a number of leading heptathletes and decathletes will be looking to end the year on a high.
Nine heptathletes with 6000-point-plus PBs and 12 athletes who have broken 8000 points in the decathlon will compete at the Stade Pierre Paul Bernard, scene of Kevin Mayer&rsquo;s world decathlon record of 9126 in 2018.
This time the fields feature Olympic bronze medallist Emma Oosterwegel and Commonwealth champion Lindon Victor as they look to move up the World Athletics Combined Events Tour standings, currently topped by Simon Ehammer and Adrianna Sulek.
Netherlands&rsquo; Oosterwegel will want to rebound after the European Championships in Munich, where her competition came to a premature end when she fell in the 100m hurdles. That came after a seventh-place finish at the World Championships in Oregon, where the 24-year-old scored 6440, 150 points off her PB set when claiming bronze at last year&rsquo;s Olympics.
Among her competition in Talence will be Austria&rsquo;s Ivona Dadic and Switzerland&rsquo;s Geraldine Ruckstuhl. Like Oosterwegel, the European Championships did not go to plan for Dadic as she was disqualified in the 200m and the 2018 world pentathlon silver medallist will be looking to complete her first heptathlon of the year. Her PB stands at 6552 from 2018. Ruckstuhl, the 2019 European U23 champion, will also be looking to finish her first heptathlon of the year when she returns to the scene of her 6391 PB set in 2018.
Other athletes with PBs over 6000 joining them are USA&rsquo;s 2019 NCAA champion Ashtin Zamzow-Mahler, France&rsquo;s Esther Turpin, Ukraine&rsquo;s Daryna Sloboda, Sweden&rsquo;s Bianca Salming, Czech Republic's Dorota Skrivanova and Italy&rsquo;s Sveva Gerevin.
In the decathlon, Grenada&rsquo;s Victor is back in action, fresh from winning his second Commonwealth Games title in Birmingham. The 29-year-old scored 8233 for that win, which followed his 8474 points for fifth at the World Championships in Oregon. His national record of 8539 was set in 2017 and he has surpassed 8300 points in each season that he has contested the decathlon since.
In Talence, Victor will go up against Germany&rsquo;s 2017 world decathlon bronze medallist Kai Kazmirek, USA&rsquo;s Steven Bastien, Czech Republic&rsquo;s Adam Helcelet, Sweden&rsquo;s Marcus Nilsson, Norway&rsquo;s Markus Rooth and France&rsquo;s Axel Hubert.
Kazmirek, who scored his 8580 PB when finishing fourth at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, topped the standings in the Combined Events Challenge last year. This season he was unable to finish his competition in Ratingen but went on to finish fifth in Gotzis, 12th at the World Championships and eighth at the European Championships.
Bastien was sixth in the heptathlon at the World Indoor Championships and set his decathlon PB of 8485 in Eugene last year, while Helcelet was 11th in Munich and set his best of 8335 in 2017.
Nilsson, meanwhile, proved his strong form at the European Championships, setting a PB of 8327 to finish fourth, and will be looking to build on that in Talence. European U23 bronze medallist Rooth also set his PB this year, the 20-year-old scoring a national record of 8307 when winning in Grosseto in May, while Hubert returns to action for the first time since Arona in June, having set his PB of 8260 in 2020.
Other entries with 8000-point-plus PBs on their CVs are Germany&rsquo;s Manuel Eitel, Estonia&rsquo;s Risto Lillemets, France&rsquo;s Makenson Gletty, Germany&rsquo;s Malik Diakite and USA&rsquo;s Jack Flood.
Also joining them is Belgium&rsquo;s 2021 European U20 champion and world U20 silver medallist Jente Hauttekeete, who scored 7814 in July.
As well as the top $30,000 prizes, there are also wild card entries for the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 on offer for winners of this season&rsquo;s World Athletics Combined Events Tour.

The Decastar in Talence welcomes athletes for the final World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting of the season

Oosterwegel and Victor in action as 2022 Tour ends in Talence

USA's Chari Hawkins and Sweden's Marcus Nilsson captured respective victories at the Meeting Internacional Arona Pruebas Combinadas Tenerife, the Spanish leg of the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold, held this weekend (4-5 June).
Hawkins&rsquo; overnight lead became even more significant after her close rival Naimh Emerson withdrew following the long jump, and she went on to win with a PB of 6243. Nilsson, meanwhile, cemented his win after an expected strong second day, scoring 8115.
The heptathlon kicked off with a clash in the 100m hurdles between Solene Ndama of France and USA's Hawkins, with the former prevailing &ndash; 13.24 to 13.30. Hawkins' compatriot Ashtin Zamzow-Mahler finished a distant third in 13.52.
Still rounding into form, Emerson managed a season's best of 14.23 for sixth but the 23-year-old proved to be the strongest in one of her favourite events, the high jump, sailing over 1.85m after a perfect card from 1.73m to 1.82m.
Hawkins, after a scare at 1.76m that saw her clear the bar at the third time of asking, managed a 1.85m PB to move into the overall lead ahead of Emerson and Claudia Conte of Spain.
The 2018 world U20 champion Emerson also took the shot put, opening with a 13.38m effort before improving her lifetime best by 17 centimetres to 13.82m. Hawkins was a close third courtesy of a 13.67m heave to comfortably maintain her lead, with Marijke Esselink of the Netherlands sandwiched between them (13.72m).
Hawkins strengthened her lead with a victory in the closing 200m, recording 24.69 clearly ahead of Emerson's 25.06, although Esselink took the previous heat in 24.79. At the end of day one Hawkins was a comfortable leader, 158 points ahead of Emerson, herself four points clear of Esselink.
In Sunday's first event, Conte overcame a foul and a botched attempt to land at 6.18m in the last round of the long jump. Hawkins and Emerson had to be satisfied with respective leaps of 5.98m and 5.93m, the Briton being narrowly surpassed by the Dutch Esserlink and threatened by Conte in the overall rankings.
A flare-up of a hamstring problem meant that Emerson withdrew from the competition before the javelin. Hawkins managed 42.88m, which was enough to maintain a comfortable 142-point lead over Conte, who threw 44.70m. Uzbekistan&rsquo;s Ekaterina Voronina moved up the standings thank to her 50.45m release.
Conte went out hard in the 800m, passing through the first lap in 1:02.70, but faded to second in 2:11.58. Hawkins was further back in 2:16.66, ending the competition with a winning score of 6243.
Conte finished second with 6174, while Esselink (6087) and Voronina (6072) were third and fourth respectively.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve loved it,&rdquo; Hawkins told DecathletesOfEurope. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s something special about the weather, the environment, the music, the people &ndash; it was really electric. I came in so focused and I was really glad I was able to do what I needed to do today.&rdquo;
<h2>Nilsson bounces back</h2>
In the decathlon, Brazil&rsquo;s Felipe Dos Santos confirmed his role as the strongest athlete in the opening events with victories in the 100m (10.64) and the long jump (7.33m).
Germany's Jannis Wolf took the runner-up place in the 100m (10.83), while Italy's Dario Dester came third in 10.93. Nilsson, meanwhile, was further down the standings in 13th overall with 11.43.
Dester climbed into second place overall after long jumping 7.29m, but Nilsson dropped further with a best of just 6.83m, almost half a metre down on his PB.
A 15.37m heave in the shot put from Nilsson put the Swede back in the frame, moving him up to ninth overall. He was still almost 200 points shy of leader Dos Santos, though, who managed 13.60m. Dester held on to second place after throwing 13.58m.
Dos Santos maintained the lead after clearing 1.98m in the high jump. Venezuela&rsquo;s Gerson Izaguirre matched that height and overtook Dester to move into second. Nilsson, meanwhile, also cleared 1.98m and climbed up to sixth place overall.
Dos Santos finally surrendered his lead in the final discipline of the day as Dester cruised to a lifetime best of 47.70 in the 400m, elevating the Italian up to first place overall with 4144 points at the half-way stage. Dos Santos and Izaguirre also surpassed 4000 points at the end of day one, while Nilsson held on to sixth place with 3931.
Izaguirre achieved his first individual discipline win in the opening event of the second day. The Venezuelan topped the 110m hurdles in 14.21, just 0.01 ahead of Dos Santos with Dester in third (14.43), just enough to hold on to the lead. Nilsson was further back in 14.73.
The Swede, just as he had done in the shot put on day one, clawed back even more points in the discus with his 47.61m heave being almost four metres farther than the next-best athlete in that event. Dos Santos reclaimed the lead after throwing 40.33m, but Dester, Izaguirre and Nilsson were all within 100 points of the Brazilian.
Nilsson, very much a &lsquo;second day&rsquo; performer, excelled in the pole vault and equalled his PB of 5.10m, taking the overall lead from Dos Santos, who managed 4.70m. Dester (4.80m) and Izaguirre (4.90m) also remained in contention with just 41 points separating the quartet going into the last two disciplines.
Confirming his status as the strongest all-round thrower in the field, Nilsson took the javelin with 59.28m to extend his lead. Dester (56.61m) and Dos Santos (56.02m) were relatively close behind, while Izaguirre managed 53.65m.
By this point, Nilsson &ndash; the 2010 world U20 bronze medallist &ndash; knew he had a good chance of winning as he was the strongest 1500m runner of the field. His target became improving on his PB of 8120, for which he would need a 4:19.32 clocking in the 1500m.
He went out hard and fell agonisingly short, but his 4:19.83 run was still enough to win with a score of 8115.
Dester finished in 4:39.70, giving him a score of 7903 for second place, while Izaguirre took third place with 7812.

Many athletes will be in pursuit of World Athletics Championships Oregon22 qualifying standards at the 11th&nbsp;Meeting Internacional Arona Pruebas Combinadas Tenerife, a World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold event, taking place&nbsp;in the Canary Islands this weekend (4-5).
The targets for Oregon are 8350 points in the decathlon and 6420 in the heptathlon.
The 27-year-old Brazilian Felipe dos Santos has exceeded the 8000-point barrier four times, topped by his 8364 PB set in Sao Paulo in December 2020. Dos Santos' strongest events are the 100m, where he holds a 10.37 lifetime best, and the javelin, where he managed a PB of 61.33m in Bragan&ccedil;a Paulista last April, when he recorded 8004 points to win the contest on his 2022 decathlon debut.
French 25-year-old Axel Hubert boasts a career best of 8260 set in Aubagne almost two years ago and will be trying to finish his first decathlon since then, as he was forced to withdraw in G&ouml;tzis last year after only four events. Hubert has only competed in individual disciplines so far this season, topped by a javelin effort of 63.39m that is still some way off his formidable PB of 69.69m set in 2020.
The experienced German Matthias Brugger has surpassed the 8000 landmark on seven occasions, led by his 8304 performance in G&ouml;tzis in 2018. More recently, the 2016 world indoor heptathlon bronze medallist finished two decathlons last year with scores over 8000 points, but he got injured in the opening 100m in Ratingen last month and Arona should be a good test for the 29-year-old.
His fellow German Andreas Bechmann is very much in the the same boat, as the European U23 champion also dropped out in Ratingen. His withdrawal came after the shot put, in what was his first appearance of the season. Bechmann's strongest events are the long jump and the shot put, boasting respective lifetime bests of 7.72m and 15.81m, both set in Tallin en route to his European U23 gold. He also has a 2.10m high jump performance to his credit.
Marcus Nilsson will also be one to watch. The 31-year-old Swede has exceeded 8000m points twice in his career, holds a 8142 PB set in 2018 and showed interesting form last month in Ratingen, where he scored 7927 to place fourth. Nilsson should be aiming for his third 8000-plus effort in Arona, backed by a strong second day that includes performances such as 5.10m in the pole vault, 65.33m in the javelin and a 4:18:01 clocking in the closing 1500m.
Yet the most in-form decathlete on show this weekend seems to be Italy's Dario Dester as the 21-year-old, a fine fourth at last year's European U23 Championships, is fresh from a career best of 8109 points in Grosseto five weeks ago. The Italian managed five PBs on that occasion, with efforts such as 10.76 in the 100m and 7.61m in the long jump.
Another rising specialist is Venezuela's Gerson Izaguirre, the newly-crowned Iberoamerican champion from La Nuc&iacute;a a fortnight ago, when he improved his PB to 7827 points.
The women's competition will also be a wide open event, with half a dozen athletes capable of taking the win this weekend.
In terms of PBs, the list is headed by Uzbekistan's Ekaterina Voronina. The 30-year-old managed a PB of 6346 last year in Tashkent, a few months prior to her 12th-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics where she fell 58 points short of her best. Voronina finished 15th in G&ouml;tzis last weekend with 5984 points.
USA's Ashtin Zamzow-Mahler boasts a 6291 lifetime best set last year in Azusa and the 25-year-old has another four 6100-plus performances to her credit, a 6198 score for second place in Fayetteville last month among them. The 100m hurdles is arguably her best discipline, having clocked 13.33 for the distance.
She will be joined by her compatriot Chari Hawkins, 12th at the 2019 World Championships in Doha and holder of a 6236 tally earlier that year at the US Trials, where she placed third. Hawkins opened this season with a 6032 performance in Fayetteville but did not complete her heptathlon last week in G&ouml;tzis as she didn't take part in the closing 800m.
Spanish fans will roar for Claudia Conte, the European U23 silver medallist.

The Spaniard enjoyed a successful indoor season, capped by sixth place at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, where she set a PB of 4499. The 22-year-old contests her second heptathlon this season after a 5914 performance in Grosseto for third place, some 272 points off the 6186 score she managed in Tallinn. Conte's strongest event is the high jump, with a 1.88m clearance set last year in Arona where she placed fifth overall.
France's Solene Ndama should also be in the mix. The 23-year-old is the 2019 European indoor pentathlon bronze medallist and excels in the hurdles, an event in which she became the European U20 champion back in 2017 before focusing on the combined events. Ndama scored a below-par 3984 pentathlon in Aubiere this winter and Arona will be her debut in the seven-event contest this outsdoor season.
Britain's Niamh Emerson made a major breakthrough back in 2018 when she captured the world U20 heptathlon title in Tampere with 6253 points. In addition to that accolade, the then 19-year-old also claimed bronze at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, and at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 2019 she was only beaten by her compatriot Katarina Johnson-Thompson. However, a series of injuries prevented her progression and the now 23-year-old will look to complete her first heptathlon since 2018. Her fellow Briton Ellen Barber (6028 PB) will also be in contention.
Watch out too for Sveva Gerevini as the 26-year-old Italian is in the form of her life having surpassed the 6000 landmark for the first time last month in Grosseto. She was runner-up there with 6011 points, helped by her performances in the opening and closing events as she recorded 13.60 and 2:09.81 for the 100m hurdles and 800m respectively.
Breaking the meeting records of France's world record-holder Kevin Mayer (8469 points in 2015) and Austria's Verena Mayr (6472 in 2019) won't be an easy task for the athletes assembled in Arona this weekend.&nbsp;
Weather forecasters predict a pleasant and sunny weekend, with temperatures reaching 24&ordm;C.

Wide open combined events contests set for Arona

Olympic decathlon champion Damian Warner achieved a record seventh victory at the Hypo Meeting in G&ouml;tzis while Olympic silver medallist Anouk Vetter became the first Dutch winner at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting on Sunday (29).
Warner trailed rising Swiss star Simon Ehammer on the first day as the world indoor silver medallist sailed out to a world decathlon best of 8.45m in the long jump. But Warner regained the lead at the start of day two and held on to the end, winning with 8797.
Vetter also only moved into the lead on Sunday as she chased world indoor silver medallist Adrianna Sulek for most of the two-day competition. But a meeting record of 59.81m in the javelin gave Vetter an unassailable lead ahead of the final discipline and she eventually won with 6693.
On the hunt for yet another G&ouml;tzis victory, Warner got his campaign off to a strong start with a 10.14 run, missing his 100m PB and own world decathlon best set in the same town in 2019 by 0.02. Ehammer also showed he meant business with a 10.46 PB, while Canada&rsquo;s Pierce LePage ran 10.35.
Next up was the long jump &ndash; Ehammer&rsquo;s time to shine. Just three weeks earlier, the 22-year-old had jumped 8.30m in Ratingen, improving the 8.28m world decathlon best that Warner set en route to his victory in G&ouml;tzis last year. It also broke the Swiss long jump record that had stood for almost 20 years and helped him on his way to a 8354-point national decathlon record.
Adding 15 centimetres to that mark, Ehammer achieved the best long jump in the world so far this season in the very first round and his delight was clear as he jumped out of the pit and started celebrating. That result launched him into the lead after two events and it was an advantage he wouldn&rsquo;t relinquish on day one.
Warner achieved the next best long jump mark of 7.93m and Estonia&rsquo;s Hans-Christian Hausenberg leapt 7.85m. LePage managed 7.49m but took no further part in the competition.

 Victor was strongest in the shot and wasn&rsquo;t too far off his PB with 16.28m as the only athlete to surpass 16 metres. Warner closed the gap on the leader with a 14.92m put to Ehammer&rsquo;s 14.42m.
USA&rsquo;s Hunter Price, making his G&ouml;tzis debut, cleared 2.09m to top the high jump results ahead of Estonia&rsquo;s world silver medallist Maicel Uibo (2.06m), as Warner and Ehammer both managed 2.03m.
Netherlands&rsquo; Rik Taam then stormed to a 400m PB of 47.28 and Warner powered to a time of 47.92. Ehammer&rsquo;s 48.44 saw him hold on to top spot overnight, but only just.
Warner finally regained his lead in the first event of the second day, though the gap between him and Ehammer in the 110m hurdles wasn&rsquo;t too significant, 13.48 to 13.75. Ehammer&rsquo;s Swiss teammate Finley Gaio was close behind with 13.86, enough to move up to third overall.
Warner extended his leading margin in the discus as his 48.24m effort was more than 10 metres farther than Ehammer&rsquo;s best (36.98m). But the big story in this event was Lindon Victor&rsquo;s monster heave of 54.85m &ndash; just 30 centimetres shy of the long-standing meeting record &ndash; which moved the Grenadian up to third overall.

 Somewhat surprisingly for a decathlon pole vault competition, the positions of the top six athletes remained the same after the eighth discipline, though the margins changed slightly.
Warner and Ehammer equalled their respective PBs of 4.90m and 5.10m to remain in first and second place. Victor&rsquo;s 4.70m was enough to hold on to third, while Kazmirek &ndash; showing his best form for quite some time &ndash; scaled 5.00m to consolidate his fourth place position ahead of Gaio and Rik Taam. A 5.30m vault from world silver medallist Maicel Uibo, meanwhile, elevated the Estonian from 11th to seventh overall.
Heavy rain and hail started to fall before the javelin, but the conditions didn&rsquo;t seem to affect the performances. World champion Niklas Kaul topped the event with a season&rsquo;s best of 69.29m, moving him into the top five overall for the first time in the competition.
Warner held on to his comfortable lead thanks to a throw of 58.62m, giving him an overall tally of 8108 and a leading margin of 243 points with one discipline still to go. Ehammer set a PB of 55.98m, just enough to hold on to second place overall from Lindon Victor, whose 63.93m throw put him just seven points adrift of Ehammer overall.
Kaul, determined to put in a strong showing after aborting his past three decathlons, took on the leading duties in the 1500m and got progressively quicker en route to a 4:16.31 clocking. Further back, Warner cruised around in 4:38.65 to end the competition with a winning score of 8797, the third-best mark of his career.
At the back of the pack, Victor and Ehammer were locked in their own battle for second place. Victor held on for a 4:55.00 run while a struggling Ehammer finished in 5:08.51. It meant Victor took second place overall with 8447 and Ehammer placed third with a Swiss record of 8377.
Kaul&rsquo;s heroic run in the 1500m moved the German up to fourth overall with 8303, his best score since winning the world title in 2019. Kazmirek was close behind with 8272, also his best mark since 2019. Taam, meanwhile, added more than 100 points to his PB to place sixth with 8246.
<h2>Vetter betters Dutch record</h2>
World indoor bronze medallist Kendell Williams blasted to an early lead in the heptathlon, clocking 13.13 in the 100m hurdles as Vetter ran 13.28 and Sulek 13.61.
Sulek has improved her high jump PB indoors and out this year and she went higher still in G&ouml;tzis, clearing 1.92m on her third attempt after seven first-time clearances from 1.71m to 1.89m to get to that point. That performance took her into the lead overall, followed by Williams who was among three athletes to achieve a 1.80m clearance. Estonia&rsquo;s Liisa-Maria Lusti got closest to Sulek with a 1.86m PB.

 Benin&rsquo;s Odile Ahouanwanou launched the shot 15.27m to top that event, while Germany&rsquo;s Vanessa Grimm recorded 14.96m, Vetter 14.88m and Finland&rsquo;s world U20 champion Saga Vanninen 14.58m. Sulek improved her PB to 13.79m and held on to her overall lead, with Vetter in second and Ahouanwanou moving up into third.
Another PB followed for Sulek as she ran 23.86 in the 200m to end the day with 3940 points. Britain&rsquo;s two-time G&ouml;tzis winner Katarina Johnson-Thompson, looking to complete her first full heptathlon since her World Championships victory in Doha in 2019, clocked the fastest time of 23.51, while Germany&rsquo;s Sophie Weissenberg recorded a PB of 23.67.
Vetter&rsquo;s 23.76 and Williams&rsquo; 23.77 secured them second and third place respectively overnight.
Vetter and Williams started the second day strongly, both leaping seasons bests of 6.47m in the long jump to close the gap on Sulek, who managed 6.28m.
But the tables turned in the javelin. Vetter opened with 47.14m, which would have been sufficient to overtake Sulek, whose opening throw of 38.66m remained her best of the day. But the Dutch all-rounder improved to 51.39m in round two and then a sensational 59.81m in round three, breaking Nafi Thiam&rsquo;s meeting record by almost half a metre. It&rsquo;s also the best ever throw within a 6000-point heptathlon.
Latvia&rsquo;s Laura Ikauniece (53.93m) and Emma Oosterwegel (52.53m) were the only other athletes to throw beyond 50 metres.
It meant that Vetter went into the 800m with a 372-point lead, essentially meaning the title was hers to lose. Competing in heavy rain and hail, Sulek won the fourth and final heat of the 800m in 2:13.80, but Vetter&rsquo;s 2:21.56 clocking sealed the crown with a score of 6693, adding four points to the Dutch record she set in Tokyo last year. Sulek was rewarded with a PB of 6429.
Grimm continued to put in a consistent series throughout the second day and emerged in third place with a PB of 6323, 22 points ahead of Multistars winner Annik Kalin. Johnson-Thompson finished down in seventh place with 6174, behind Oosterwegel (6265) and Britain&rsquo;s Holly Mills (6260).
